Mercedes-Benz GLA180 in Singapore, a used buy costed out

The 1,595cc Mercedes-Benz GLA180 in Singapore: road tax, the COE rule and dated car insurance from 15 insurers, with similar cars compared.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The GLA180 is one of the smaller-engined cars in the Mercedes-Benz range. The version on our quote form has a 1,595cc engine, and it is not on the new-car list now, so it is a second-hand buy. If you are weighing one up, this guide gives you the yearly costs we can put figures on, and the ones you will need to price yourself.

Every insurance price here is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. It shows how prices compare. It is not your quote.

The GLA180 we priced

There is no entry for this GLA180 on the new-car list now. So this guide has no list price, power figure or body type for it.

Our quote form prices the GLA180 with its 1,595cc petrol engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote, and every figure below is for it.

The COE rule

At 1,595cc, the COE category turns on power. The GLA180 needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. With more power, it needs a Category B COE.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. On a used car, the COE is already paid. What you pay for is the years left on it. The COE page has later rounds.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,595cc engine S$739.96 a year, before any age surcharge.

Once the car is past 10 years, the surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Check the first registration date to see how close the car is to these steps. The road tax page explains the formula.

Insurance: a long list of insurers

The Mercedes-Benz GLA180 price page prices this example:

  • Car: GLA180, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

15 insurers price it, more than for many cars. Only one insurer on our panel has no online price for it. The lowest premium is S$742.90 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,405.26. That is S$662.36 more, or 89% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

With so many insurers quoting, you have plenty to compare. The gap still runs to hundreds of dollars a year. Some prices are estimates, so check those with the insurer.

The excess

The lowest plan has a S$600 excess, the most common level on this page. Others carry S$500, S$750 or S$800. One plan has no excess. Several ask S$2,500 or S$3,000. You pay the excess on each claim before the insurer pays.

Basic plan or fuller plan

Many insurers here list two or three plans. The basic one is the lowest-priced. The others may add extras, such as a courtesy car or NCD protection. Before you compare two insurers, make sure you are comparing similar plans.

When one thing changes

The lowest price with a single change:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,002.00, S$259.10 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,002.00, S$259.10 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,002.00, S$259.10 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$742.90, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$764.82, S$21.92 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$666.79, S$76.11 less

Losing the NCD costs most, at 35% more on the lowest price. The younger driver lands on the same figure. The 65-year-old pays the same as the 40-year-old. An 8-year-old GLA180 is cheaper to insure. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different sums.

How it compares

The price page sets six similar cars beside it:

Their average lowest price is S$724.93. The GLA180 is 2% above that. Four of the six cost less to insure, and two, the Mazda 3 and the BMW X1, cost more. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page has the other models.

Before you commit to one

  • Check the engine: GLA180s have come with more than one engine size. The road tax here holds only for the 1,595cc car.
  • Check the dates: the first registration date sets the surcharge step and the COE years left.
  • Quote your own details: the example is a 40-year-old with a 50% NCD. Yours may differ, and the list above shows how much that can matter.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at home and work, plus parking when you go out.
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and times.
  • Upkeep: servicing to the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over time. On a used car, ask for the service record.
  • Depreciation: what you pay set against the COE years left and what the car fetches later.

The yearly figures in one list

For the Mercedes-Benz GLA180 1,595cc:

  • Road tax: S$739.96 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, example driver: from S$742.90 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,002.00
  • Insurance, car 8 years old: from S$666.79

For reference: COE closed at S$130,001 (Category A) and S$130,100 (Category B) in the October 2026 1st round.
