What the Mercedes-Benz GLA180 Progressive costs to tax and insure

Road tax on a 1,332cc engine, the COE rule and dated car insurance prices for the Mercedes-Benz GLA180 Progressive in Singapore.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The GLA180 Progressive is a trim of the Mercedes-Benz GLA, with a 1,332cc engine. It is not on the new-car list now, so you are most likely looking at a used one. This guide sets out the yearly bills: road tax and car insurance, plus the COE rule and the costs that depend on you.

The insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They let you see how prices compare. They are not a quote.

The version on our form

Since the new-car list has no entry for it, this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.

Our quote form prices the GLA180 Progressive with its 1,332cc petrol engine, the version most of our insurers quote.

COE: A or B

With a 1,332cc engine, power decides the category:

  • 97kW (130bhp) or less: Category A, which closed at S$130,001 in the October 2026 1st round
  • More than that: Category B, which closed at S$130,100

On a used GLA, the COE was paid when the car was first registered. You pay for its remaining years through the asking price. See the COE page for later rounds.

Road tax

The 1,332cc engine pays S$585.72 a year under LTA's formula, before any age surcharge. A small engine keeps this bill low. It is one of the few running costs here that is fixed by the car itself, not by you or by the insurer you pick.

The surcharge starts after 10 years:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page shows the full formula.

Insurance spread

The Mercedes-Benz GLA180 Progressive price page prices this case:

  • Car: GLA180 Progressive, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% NCD, no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

13 insurers price the car. The lowest premium is S$742.90. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,265.83. That is S$522.93 more, or 70% on top. Prices include 9% GST.

That is S$522.93 a year between the low and high end for the same car and person. Over several years of ownership, the gap adds up. Three insurers on our panel have no online price for this model. Some prices shown are estimates.

Excess

Most plans here carry a S$600 excess, the lowest plan included. Some carry S$500 or S$800. One has no excess, and the second-lowest plan asks S$2,500. That plan is only a few dollars dearer than the lowest, but its excess is far higher.

What the plan names tell you

Some insurers list a basic plan and one or two fuller ones. The fuller plans cost more and may add cover, such as a courtesy car or protection for your NCD. Compare similar plans across insurers, not a basic one against a fuller one.

The price when one thing changes

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,002.00, S$259.10 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,002.00, S$259.10 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,002.00, S$259.10 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$742.90, unchanged
  • A new car, registered this year: S$735.74, S$7.16 less
  • A car 8 years old: S$666.79, S$76.11 less

Losing the NCD is the biggest change, adding 35%. The younger driver pays the same higher figure. A new car costs a few dollars less than a 3-year-old one, and an 8-year-old one costs less again. These are lowest prices only; other plans may change by other amounts.

Six similar cars

For the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$742.05. The GLA180 Progressive costs about the same as that. Three of the six are cheaper to insure. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page covers the rest of the range.

Checks before you buy

  • Engine: GLA180s came with more than one engine. Confirm the 1,332cc on the log card, since road tax depends on it.
  • First registration: it sets the road tax step and the COE years left.
  • Your own quote: your NCD and age shift the price, as shown above.
  • Price dates: each price on the page shows when it was read. A price read some days ago may have moved since.

Costs that depend on you

Some costs depend on where you live, how you use the car and how long you keep it. There is no fair single figure for them, so plan for each one yourself.

  • Parking: season parking at your block or condo, plus work and weekends.
  • Petrol: how far you go and the pump price.
  • ERP: the gantries you pass and when.
  • Servicing: follow the maker's schedule. Ask what has been done on a used car.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later.

Summary

  • Road tax: S$585.72 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
