Running a used Mercedes-Benz GL in Singapore, tax and insurance

A used Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC in Singapore: Category B COE, road tax on a 3,000cc engine and dated insurance prices for several drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Mercedes-Benz GL is no longer on the new-car list, so in Singapore you will find it only on the used market. The costs that recur each year are the main ones to weigh: road tax on a big engine and car insurance. This guide covers both, then the COE and the costs that depend on you.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They help you compare. They are not a premium you have been offered.

Two GLs on the form

The new-car list has no GL on sale now, so this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.

Our quote form lists two versions:

  • GL 320: 2,987cc
  • GL 350 BlueTEC: 3,000cc

The figures below are for the GL 350 BlueTEC, the version most of our insurers quote.

COE category

With its 3,000cc engine, above 1,600cc, the GL 350 BlueTEC needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

A GL on sale now may be on its first COE or a renewed one. Ask which, and when it ends. The COE page has later results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 3,000cc engine S$2,385.10 a year, before any age surcharge.

A GL is likely to be old enough for the surcharge:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

On this base, the 50% step adds a large sum each year. Check the registration date to see where the car sits. The road tax page has the details.

Insurance for the example driver

The Mercedes-Benz GL price page prices this case:

  • Car: GL 350 BlueTEC, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

The page prices a 3-year-old car for every model. The GL you are looking at may well be older. The 8-year-old line below gives a sense of how age moves the price, but your own quote will use the real age.

11 insurers price the example. The lowest premium is S$1,046.37 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,916.39. That is S$1,870.02 more, or 179% on top. Prices include 9% GST.

That is nearly three times the lowest premium at the top end. Some prices are estimates, so check them.

The gap is not spread evenly. Most plans sit within a few hundred dollars of each other, and a single plan sits far above the rest. So the spread mostly tells you that it pays to look past the first quote you get.

Excess

Most plans carry a S$600 excess, the lowest included. Others carry S$500, S$750 or S$800, one has none, and one sets S$2,500. You pay the excess first on any claim.

Five insurers on our panel have no online price for this model.

How one change moves the price

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,525.32, S$478.95 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,525.32, S$478.95 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,525.32, S$478.95 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,143.46, S$97.09 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,064.65, S$18.28 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$966.74, S$79.63 less

Losing the NCD adds 46% to the lowest price. The older driver pays a little more. The older car costs less to insure, which helps on a used GL. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move differently.

Similar cars

For the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$1,242.89. The GL is 16% below that. Only the BMW 7 Series is cheaper to insure. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page covers the rest of the range.

What to check on an older GL

  • COE end date: it tells you how long the car can stay on the road without a renewal.
  • Road tax step: the surcharge may rise while you own it.
  • Your own premium: price the actual car, at its actual age, with your own NCD.
  • Service records: an older car may have big items due. Ask what has been done.

Costs that depend on you

These vary from owner to owner, and no single figure fits them. Plan for each one with your own habits in mind.

  • Parking: season parking at home and work. Check your own block's rates first.
  • Fuel: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and timing.
  • Repairs: tyres, brakes, a battery, plus anything the service record flags.
  • Depreciation: on an older car, mostly a matter of the COE years left.

The yearly figures

For the Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC:

  • Road tax: S$2,385.10 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, example driver: from S$1,046.37 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,525.32
  • Insurance, car 8 years old: from S$966.74

For reference, a Category B COE closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
