An older Mercedes-Benz C200 Kompressor Estate and what it costs to keep

Road tax, Category B COE and dated car insurance prices for the Mercedes-Benz Estate C200 Kompressor in Singapore, set against similar cars.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Mercedes-Benz Estate on our quote form is the C200 Kompressor, an older car with a 1,800cc engine. Anyone buying one in Singapore is buying used. This guide looks only at the costs: road tax, the COE category and car insurance, then the bills that depend on you.

The insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They let you compare. They are not your quote.

The car priced

There is no entry for this model on the new-car list now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type from it.

Our quote form prices the ESTATE C200 Kompressor (A), with a 1,800cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote, and every figure below is for it.

COE

The 1,800cc engine is above 1,600cc. That means a Category B COE, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

An older car like this will have had its COE paid long ago. Check whether the car is on its first COE or a renewed one, and how many years remain. The COE page has the latest bidding results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,800cc engine S$977.50 a year, before any age surcharge.

For an older car, the surcharge is likely to apply:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

So the road tax on an estate past 14 years old is half as much again as the base. Look at the registration date to see which step applies. The road tax page has the formula.

Insurance for one example

The Mercedes-Benz Estate price page prices this example:

  • Car: Estate C200 Kompressor, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

The example uses a 3-year-old car, as every price page does. If the car you are looking at is older, the 8-year-old line further down may be closer to it. Your own quote will reflect the car's actual age.

13 insurers price the example. The lowest premium is S$825.86 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,455.07. That is S$629.21 more, or 76% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

That is a large spread for one car and one driver. Some prices are estimates, so check those.

The page lists more than one plan for several insurers. The lower plans are basic comprehensive cover. The higher ones may add extras, such as a replacement car or NCD protection. Compare like with like before you weigh the prices.

The excess

The excess is your share of a claim. Most plans here carry S$600, including the lowest. Others carry S$500, S$750 or S$800. One plan has none, and one asks S$2,500.

Three insurers on our panel have no online price for this model.

How the price changes

The lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,097.58, S$271.72 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,097.58, S$271.72 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,097.58, S$271.72 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$836.07, S$10.21 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$824.15, S$1.71 less
  • A car 8 years old: S$764.82, S$61.04 less

The NCD makes the biggest difference: 33% more on the lowest price without it. Age of driver matters little at the older end. The 8-year-old car is cheaper to insure. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move differently.

Against similar cars

The price page compares six cars for the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$708.50. The Estate is 17% above that, and five of the six cost less to insure. Only the BMW 5 Series is dearer here. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page lists the other models.

Points on an older car

  • COE status: a renewed COE has its own end date. Check how long the car can stay on the road.
  • Road tax step: the surcharge rises with age, so the bill may go up within the time you own it.
  • Insurance on your own details: price the real car at its real age, with your own NCD.
  • Service history: an older car may need more parts. Ask what has been done and what is due.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at home and work, plus other parking.
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and times.
  • Repairs: tyres, brakes, a battery and other wear items. Set some money aside each year, since these come up without much warning on any car.
  • Depreciation: on an older car, this turns mainly on the COE years left.

The yearly figures

For the Mercedes-Benz Estate C200 Kompressor:

  • Road tax: S$977.50 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, example driver: from S$825.86 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,097.58
  • Insurance, car 8 years old: from S$764.82

For reference, a Category B COE closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
