The Mercedes-Benz Saloon on our quote form is an older E-Class: the E250 CGI Blueefficiency, with a 1,800cc engine. It is sold only on the used market now. For a buyer, the useful numbers are the yearly ones. This guide covers road tax, car insurance and the COE category, then the costs that depend on you.
The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They help you compare. They are not your quote.
Three saloons on the form
The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here.
Our quote form lists three versions:
- E250 CGI Blueefficiency (A): 1,800cc
- E300 Avantgarde (A): 2,996cc
- E350 Avantgarde (A): 3,498cc
The figures below are for the E250 CGI, the version most of our insurers quote. The larger engines pay much more road tax.
COE
The E250 CGI's 1,800cc engine is above 1,600cc, so it needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
A car of this age may be on a renewed COE. Ask when the current one ends. The COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 1,800cc engine S$977.50 a year, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge comes in after 10 years:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Check the first registration date to see which step applies now and which comes next. The road tax page covers the larger engines too.
Insurance for the example driver
The Mercedes-Benz Saloon price page prices this example:
- Car: E250 CGI Blueefficiency, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
Every price page uses a 3-year-old car. The one you buy may be older, so price the real car before you commit.
14 insurers price the example, and only two on our panel do not. The lowest premium is S$844.73 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,646.48. That is S$801.75 more, or 95% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
So the top end is close to double the bottom for the same car and driver. Some of the prices shown are estimates.
Excess
The lowest plan carries a S$2,500 excess. The second-lowest, about forty dollars dearer, carries S$600. Most plans here carry S$600. Others carry S$500, S$750 or S$800, and one has none. If you claim, the excess is the first part of the bill you pay.
Plan levels and dates
Many insurers list two or three plans each, a few hundred dollars apart. The fuller ones may add cover, such as a courtesy car or NCD protection. Compare like with like across insurers.
Each price shows the date it was read. Some are more than a week old, so they may have changed since.
What changes the price
The lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,295.86, S$451.13 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,278.00, S$433.27 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,295.86, S$451.13 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$969.28, S$124.55 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$824.15, S$20.58 less
- A car 8 years old: S$795.72, S$49.01 less
Losing the NCD lifts the lowest price by 53%. A 20% NCD helps only a little, saving under twenty dollars on the no-NCD figure. The older driver pays more than the 40-year-old. The older car costs less to insure. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different sums.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares:
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Toyota Harrier: S$742.90
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- BMW 5 Series: S$861.03
- Hyundai Avante: S$622.34
- Kia Cerato: S$660.69
Their average lowest price is S$708.50. The E250 CGI is 19% above that. Five of the six cost less to insure; only the BMW 5 Series costs more. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page has the other models.
Checks on an older E250
- COE end date: how long the car can stay on the road.
- Engine: confirm it is the 1,800cc E250 CGI. The E300 and E350 pay far more road tax.
- Surcharge step: it may rise while you own the car.
- Service history: ask what has been done and what is due.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at home and work, plus parking in town.
- Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and timing.
- Repairs: tyres, brakes, a battery and other wear items on an older car.
- Depreciation: on an older car, mostly a matter of the COE years left.
