Buyers looking at a Mercedes-Benz E-Class tend to cross-shop a handful of executive saloons and SUVs. If cost is part of that choice, the figures you can compare are COE, road tax and car insurance. This guide sets out the E-Class's own figures, then puts it beside six cars from its price page.
The insurance figures are examples for one standard driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not a quote for you.
The E-Class range
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 has seven versions, all made in Germany and all petrol-electric. Prices are as listed on 2026-10-10, with COE included that day:
- Coupe E300 AMG Line Night Edition Premium Plus (mild hybrid): 1,991cc, 268bhp, S$354,900
- Saloon E200 Avantgarde (mild hybrid): 1,999cc, 201bhp, S$368,888
- Saloon E200 Exclusive (mild hybrid): 1,999cc, 201bhp, S$383,888
- Saloon E200 AMG Line Premium (mild hybrid): 1,999cc, 204bhp, S$390,000
- Saloon E200 AMG Line (mild hybrid): 1,999cc, 201bhp, S$410,888
- Saloon E300e Avantgarde (plug-in hybrid): 1,999cc, 308bhp, S$428,888
- Saloon E53 AMG 4MATIC+ (plug-in hybrid): 2,999cc, 577bhp, S$554,888
List prices move with COE. Ask for a dated figure and check what it includes.
The insurance prices below are for the E 200 2.0 (1,991cc) on our quote form, the version most insurers quote.
COE and road tax for the E 200
COE. The price page says that with a 1,991cc engine, above 1,600cc, the E 200 2.0 needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round. The COE page has later rounds.
Road tax. For the 1,991cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$1,201.54 a year before any age surcharge. The E53 has a much larger engine and pays more. Look up any size on the road tax page.
Age surcharge, once the car passes 10 years:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Insuring the E-Class
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class price page prices this case:
- Car: E 200 2.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
14 insurers price it; two on our panel do not quote it online. The lowest premium is S$861.03. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,457.48: S$596.45 more, or 69% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Excesses run from S$0 to S$3,000, with most at S$600. The second-lowest premium, only a little above the lowest, carries a S$2,500 excess.
When one detail changes
- No NCD (0%): S$1,243.96, S$382.93 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,243.96, S$382.93 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,243.96, S$382.93 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$861.03, the same, 13 insurers pricing
- A new car, registered this year: S$866.45, S$5.42 more, 13 insurers pricing
- A car 8 years old: S$787.96, S$73.07 less
Losing your NCD adds 44% to the lowest price, the biggest change here. A new car costs almost the same as a 3-year-old one. These are lowest prices; other plans may move differently.
Rival: Toyota Harrier
The Toyota Harrier is priced at 1,986cc. Its lowest price for the same driver and car age is S$742.90, with 15 insurers. It is the lowest of the group on insurance.
Rival: BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5 Series, at 1,998cc, has a lowest price of S$861.03 from 15 insurers. That matches the E-Class exactly.
Rival: Toyota Voxy
The Toyota Voxy is priced at 1,797cc. Its lowest price is S$793.75, from 14 insurers, so it also costs less to insure than the E-Class.
Rival: Lexus NX
The Lexus NX is priced at 1,998cc. Its lowest price is S$972.39, from 14 insurers.
Rival: Lexus RX
The Lexus RX, also priced at 1,998cc, matches the NX at S$972.39, with 14 insurers.
Rival: BMW 3 Series
The BMW 3 Series, at 1,998cc, has the highest lowest price of the group: S$1,009.11, from 15 insurers.

Who each suits on cost
On insurance alone, the two Toyotas start lowest for this driver. The E-Class and the 5 Series sit level in the middle. The two Lexus models and the 3 Series start higher.
On road tax, cars of around 2.0 litres pay similar sums, so engine size matters more than the badge. Check each rival's exact engine on its price page.
For a young driver or a lost NCD, the order can change. These comparisons use one standard driver.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at your condo or HDB block, and parking at work.
- Petrol: depends on how far you drive. The plug-in hybrids can also be charged.
- ERP: depends on your routes and when you travel.
- Servicing and repairs: ask what the warranty and any service plan cover.
- Depreciation: depends on the price you pay and what the car fetches later.
