The real yearly cost of a Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 in Singapore

Road tax on a 3,498cc engine, the COE category and dated car insurance prices for the Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 in Singapore.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The version of the Mercedes-Benz CLS most insurers quote here is the CLS 350 with a 3,498cc engine. In Singapore, an engine that size brings a heavy road tax bill. This guide shows that bill, the COE category and the car insurance spread, which is unusually wide for this car.

All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are a guide to the costs, not a quote for you.

The versions on our form

The new-car list has no CLS on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type to give from it.

Our quote form lists three CLS versions:

  • CLS 250 CDI Sedan: 2,143cc
  • CLS 300D AMG: 1,950cc
  • CLS 350 3.5: 3,498cc

The figures below are for the CLS 350 3.5, the version most of our insurers quote. The other two have smaller engines, so their road tax and premiums will differ.

COE

The CLS 350's 3,498cc engine is above 1,600cc. That means a Category B COE, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

Any CLS you buy now will be used. Its COE is paid already, and the years left are part of the asking price. Later results are on the COE page.

Road tax: the big yearly item

LTA's formula gives the 3,498cc engine S$3,163.98 a year in road tax, before any age surcharge. For this car, road tax can cost more than the insurance.

The age surcharge then adds to that base:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Because the base is so high, each step adds a large sum. Check the car's age closely before you buy. The road tax page shows how engine size drives the figure.

Insurance: a very wide spread

The Mercedes-Benz CLS price page prices one example:

  • Car: CLS 350 3.5, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

11 insurers price this car. The lowest premium is S$1,071.54 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$3,676.12. That is S$2,604.58 more, or 243% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

That is one of the widest gaps you will see. The dearest lowest plan costs more than three times the lowest premium. Here, one quote alone tells you very little.

Excess

The lowest plan comes with a S$2,500 excess. Most others carry S$600, and some carry S$500, S$750 or S$800. One has no excess, and one asks S$3,000. A higher excess means you pay more of any claim yourself.

Five insurers on our panel do not price this model online. One of them prices only electric cars online. Some prices that are shown are marked as estimates.

What changes the price

The lowest price when one detail changes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,271.42, S$199.88 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,271.42, S$199.88 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,271.42, S$199.88 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,228.88, S$157.34 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,062.42, S$9.12 less
  • A car 8 years old: S$972.72, S$98.82 less

Losing the NCD adds 19% to the lowest price, a smaller jump than on many cars. The older driver pays nearly as much extra. The 8-year-old car is the least costly of these to insure. These are lowest prices only, and other plans can move by other sums.

Against six similar cars

The price page compares six cars with engines of a similar size:

Their average lowest price is S$1,242.89. The CLS is 14% below that. Only the BMW 7 Series is cheaper to insure for this driver. The Mercedes-Benz car insurance page lists the other models.

Buying a used CLS

  • Confirm the engine: a CLS 350 and a CLS 300D pay very different road tax.
  • Check the dates: first registration sets the surcharge and the COE years left.
  • Price your own cover: your NCD and age shift the premium, and the spread here is wide.

Costs that depend on you

These vary from owner to owner, so there is no single figure for them:

  • Parking: season parking at home and at work, and parking when you go out.
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on where and when you drive.
  • Servicing and repairs: follow the maker's schedule, and ask for the service history. Parts and labour vary, so get quotes for any work that is due.
  • Depreciation: what you pay now against what the car fetches later, over the COE years left.

The yearly figures we can show

For the Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 3.5:

  • Road tax: S$3,163.98 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, example driver: from S$1,071.54 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,271.42
  • Insurance, car 8 years old: from S$972.72

For reference, a Category B COE closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
