The CX-5 is a mid-sized SUV that many families shortlist. On insurance, the figures for it stand out: for the standard driver on our price page, it costs less to insure than all six similar cars we compare it with. That is a good place to start, but it is only one cost of several.
This guide sets out each cost we have a figure for. The insurance prices are examples for one driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own quote will depend on you, so use these to see how the costs compare, not as a fixed price.
What is on the new-car list
The list read on 2026-10-10 shows the CX-5 as an SUV made in Japan, in two versions. Both are petrol-electric mild hybrids:
- CX-5 Mild Hybrid 2.0 Luxury: 1,998cc, 162bhp
- CX-5 Mild Hybrid 2.0 Luxury Sports: 1,998cc, 162bhp
Our quote form has two CX-5 engines, the 2.0 (1,998cc) and the 2.5 (2,488cc). The insurance figures are for the 2.0, which most insurers on our panel quote.
Buying one new
As listed on 2026-10-10, COE included:
- 2.0 Luxury: S$245,888
- 2.0 Luxury Sports: S$265,888
Both move with the COE result each round. Ask each seller what their price covers, and set the offers side by side on the same terms.
Its COE category
The price page settles this for the CX-5 2.0. With a 1,998cc engine, above 1,600cc, it needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round. A new round brings a new figure; see the COE page.
Road tax for the 2.0
Petrol road tax follows engine size. For 1,998cc, LTA's formula gives S$1,209.76 a year, before any surcharge for age.
After 10 years, the surcharge rises in steps:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
An older CX-5 with the 2.5 engine pays a higher base rate. The road tax page has other engine sizes.
Insurance: the example driver
The Mazda CX-5 price page sets one profile:
- Car: CX-5 2.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For it, 15 insurers give a price. The lowest is S$721.59 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan costs most asks at least S$1,757.16, which is S$1,035.57 more, or 144% on top. Prices include 9% GST. One insurer on our panel has no online price for the CX-5 yet.
So the same CX-5 and the same driver can cost more than twice as much from one insurer as from another.
Excess and workshop
Every plan has an excess, the part of a claim you pay. Most here carry S$600, with a range from S$0 to S$3,000. The lowest-priced plan on the page lets you use any workshop or an authorised one, while many others name authorised workshops. Check both points on any plan you consider.
The price for other drivers and car ages
With all else the same, the page shows these lowest prices:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,157.56, S$435.97 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,157.56, S$435.97 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,157.56, S$435.97 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$721.59, the same
- New car, registered this year: S$742.90, S$21.31 more
- Car 8 years old: S$660.69, S$60.90 less
The NCD makes the biggest difference. Without it, the lowest price is 60% higher. A newly registered CX-5 costs a little more to insure than the 3-year-old example. These are lowest prices only, and dearer plans may move by other sums.
How it stacks up against similar cars
Six similar cars, priced for the same driver and car age:
- Lexus NX: S$972.39
- Lexus RX: S$972.39
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class: S$861.03
- BMW 5 Series: S$861.03
- Toyota Voxy: S$793.75
- Toyota Harrier: S$742.90
Their average lowest price is S$867.25. The CX-5 sits 17% below it, and none of the six costs less to insure. Other Mazda models are on the Mazda car insurance page.
Costs that vary by owner
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when you go out. Check your own rates.
- Petrol: tied to your distance and the pump price. The mild hybrid adds an electric motor to the petrol engine.
- ERP: set by your routes and times.
- Servicing and wear: the maker's schedule sets the visits; tyres, brakes and a battery come due as the years go by. Read what the warranty covers.
- Depreciation: depends on the price you pay and what the car is worth later in its COE life.
