Chevrolet Spark 0.8 in Singapore and the low cost of keeping one

The Chevrolet Spark 0.8 in Singapore: road tax for its 796cc engine, the COE rule and dated car insurance prices for one driver.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

With a 796cc engine, the Chevrolet Spark 0.8 has one of the smallest engines on our quote form. That keeps its road tax low. If you are looking at a used Spark, this page sets out what it costs to keep each year, and how car insurance prices move.

All insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not a quote, and your own premium depends on your details.

Versions on the form

The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now, so there is no list price, power or body type here.

Our quote form lists two versions:

  • Spark 0.8: 796cc
  • Spark 1.0: 995cc

The figures below are for the Spark 0.8, the version most of our insurers quote. The 1.0 has a larger engine, so its road tax is a little higher.

Road tax

For the 796cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$351.12 a year. That was checked on 2026-10-19 and is before any age surcharge.

That is a low figure by Singapore standards. Older cars pay more on top:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Check how old the car is before you budget. The road tax page has the sum for the 1.0.

The COE

With a 796cc engine, the Spark 0.8 needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs a Category B COE if its power is more.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These change every round, and the COE page has the latest.

The COE is the same price for a small car as for a large one in the same category. On a used Spark, the years left on the COE often decide most of what the car is worth.

Car insurance

The details priced

The Chevrolet Spark price page prices:

  • Car: Spark 0.8, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

What insurers ask

13 insurers price the Spark for that driver. The lowest premium is S$545.00 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,181.16. That is S$636.16 more, or 117% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Three insurers on our panel have no online price for this model.

Even for a small, low-cost car, the dearest price is more than twice the lowest. At the lowest price, insurance comes to more than the road tax.

The excess

Most plans set a S$600 excess. Two set S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three set S$2,500 and one S$3,000. One plan has no excess.

On a car of modest value, a high excess can cover much of a typical repair. So the excess may matter as much as the premium.

How the price moves

The price page shows the lowest price when one detail differs:

  • No NCD (0%): S$846.44, S$301.44 more
  • 20% NCD: S$739.43, S$194.43 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$845.70, S$300.70 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$545.00, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$545.00, the same
  • A car 8 years old: S$528.88, S$16.12 less

Losing the NCD costs most, at 55% more. The younger driver is almost as dear. A 20% NCD sits between the two.

Driver age and a new car make no difference to the lowest price. An 8-year-old Spark is only S$16.12 cheaper.

These are lowest prices. Other plans may move by other amounts.

Why the NCD matters so much

The NCD is a discount that grows with each year you go without a claim. Lose it, and the gap in the list above is what you pay each year until it is rebuilt.

That is why a small claim can cost more than it seems. For a small repair, paying it yourself is one way to keep the NCD intact. Some plans also let you protect the NCD for an extra charge. Compare the cost of that extra with the price lines above.

Comparing quotes

When you set plans side by side, check:

  • Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop. Plans that allow any workshop may be priced differently.
  • Named drivers: a younger or newer driver on the policy can raise the price, as the line above shows.
  • NCD protection: an optional extra on some plans.
  • Excess: what you pay on each claim.

The price page does not list similar cars for the Spark. For a ranking across makes, see the cheapest cars to insure page. Other Chevrolets are on the Chevrolet car insurance page.

Before you buy a used Spark

A few points to confirm:

  • COE expiry: how many years of use you are buying.
  • Road tax: when it is next due, and whether a surcharge applies.
  • Your own quote: priced on your details and this car.

Costs that depend on you

These have no single figure:

  • Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus elsewhere. Parking charges are not lower for a small car.
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and hours.
  • Parts and servicing: for an older car, ask how easy parts are to find. Tyres, brakes and a battery come due.
  • Depreciation: for a used car, mostly the COE years left.

The yearly figures

For the Chevrolet Spark 0.8 (796cc), dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$351.12 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$545.00 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, 20% NCD: from S$739.43
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$846.44
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$528.88

A fresh COE in the October 2026 1st round was S$130,001 (Category A) or S$130,100 (Category B).
