Chevrolet Malibu in Singapore, road tax, COE and insurance costs

What a used Chevrolet Malibu costs to keep in Singapore: road tax for 2,400cc, a Category B COE and dated insurance prices for one driver.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

A Chevrolet Malibu carries a 2.4-litre engine, and in Singapore that sets two of its costs straight away. Its road tax is well above that of a smaller car, and it needs a Category B COE. This page puts figures on those costs and on car insurance.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not a quote. Your own premium depends on your details.

The Malibu on our form

The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now. There is no list price, power or body type here.

Our quote form lists two versions:

  • Malibu: 2,400cc
  • Malibu 2.4: 2,384cc

The figures below are for the Malibu (2,400cc), the version most of our insurers quote. The two engines are close in size, so road tax is close too, but not the same.

Car insurance first

The standard driver

The Chevrolet Malibu price page prices:

  • Car: Malibu (2,400cc), registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

What 14 insurers ask

14 insurers price the Malibu for that driver. The lowest premium is S$764.82 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,624.06. That is S$859.24 more, or 112% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Two insurers on our panel have no online price for this model.

The dearest is more than double the lowest. For an older car, that gap may matter more than any other choice you make about cover.

The excess

Most plans set a S$600 excess. Two set S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three set S$2,500 and one S$3,000. One plan has no excess.

Compare the excess with the premium on each plan. A low premium can come with a high excess.

What changes the price

The price page shows the lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,130.43, S$365.61 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,130.43, S$365.61 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,130.43, S$365.61 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$764.82, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$787.96, S$23.14 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$700.28, S$64.54 less

No NCD adds 48% at the lowest price. A 20% NCD and a younger driver reach the same figure.

The older driver pays the same as the 40-year-old. An 8-year-old Malibu is cheaper to insure than the 3-year-old car on the page. A used Malibu on sale now may be older still.

These are lowest prices. Dearer plans may move differently.

The COE

With a 2,400cc engine, above 1,600cc, the Malibu needs a Category B COE. In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100.

It changes every round; the COE page has the latest. On a used Malibu, the years left on the COE matter most. They set how long you can keep the car without renewing.

Road tax

For the 2,400cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$1,681.30 a year. That was checked on 2026-10-19 and is before any age surcharge.

It is the largest fixed yearly cost on this page. On an older car it rises further:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page has the sum for the 2,384cc version.

Terms worth a look

Beyond the premium, check:

  • Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop. Plans that let you pick any workshop may cost more or less.
  • Named drivers: an extra, younger driver can push the price up.
  • NCD protection: an extra some plans offer, at a cost.
  • Excess: your share of each claim.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:

Their average is S$892.30. The Malibu is 14% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. Two Toyotas match it.

Other Chevrolets are on the Chevrolet car insurance page. The cheapest cars to insure page ranks models across makes.

Checks before you buy a used Malibu

A few things are worth confirming before you agree a price:

  • COE expiry: the date sets how many years of use you are paying for.
  • Road tax: when the next payment falls due, and whether the age surcharge applies.
  • Insurance: get a quote for this exact car and your own details before you commit, since your price may differ from the examples here.

Costs that depend on you

These have no single figure:

  • Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus parking elsewhere.
  • Petrol: a 2.4-litre engine, your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and hours.
  • Parts and servicing: for an older car, ask about parts and who services it. Tyres, brakes and a battery come due.
  • Depreciation: for a used car, mostly the COE years left.

Summary of the figures

For the Chevrolet Malibu (2,400cc), dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$1,681.30 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$764.82 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,130.43
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$700.28

A fresh Category B COE closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
