Chevrolet Optra 1.6 costs in Singapore, insurance and road tax

The Chevrolet Optra 1.6 in Singapore: road tax, the COE rule and dated car insurance prices for one stated driver, October 2026.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Chevrolet Optra is a 1.6-litre model that has been off the new-car list for some time. If one is on your shortlist, its yearly costs are easy to set out. This page covers car insurance, the COE and road tax, then the costs that depend on you.

All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not a quote.

Versions on our form

The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now. So this page gives no list price, power or body type.

Our quote form lists two versions with the same engine:

  • Optra 1.6: 1,598cc
  • Optra 1.6 Estate: 1,598cc

The figures below are for the Optra 1.6, the version most of our insurers quote. Both share the 1,598cc engine, so their road tax is the same.

Insurance prices

The profile

The Chevrolet Optra price page prices:

  • Car: Optra 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

The range

14 insurers price the Optra for that driver. The lowest premium is S$642.42 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,146.22. That is S$503.80 more, or 78% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Two insurers on our panel have no online price for this model.

The excess

Most plans set a S$600 excess. Three set S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three set S$2,500 and one S$3,000. Every plan on this page carries some excess.

On an older car, a S$2,500 or S$3,000 excess can be close to the cost of many repairs. Weigh it with the premium.

How the premium shifts

Here is the lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$961.77, S$319.35 more
  • 20% NCD: S$961.77, S$319.35 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$961.77, S$319.35 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$642.42, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$660.69, S$18.27 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$586.41, S$56.01 less

Without the NCD, the lowest price rises by 50%. The 20% NCD and younger-driver cases hit the same figure.

Driver age makes no difference at the lowest price here. The car's age makes a small one: an 8-year-old car is a little cheaper. Most Optras on sale will be older than that.

These are lowest prices. Other plans may move by more or less.

COE

With a 1,598cc engine, the Optra 1.6 needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs a Category B COE if its power is more.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These change every round; the COE page has the latest.

For a used Optra, look at how long the COE has left. It sets how long the car can stay on the road as it is.

Road tax

For the 1,598cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$741.72 a year. That was checked on 2026-10-19 and is before any age surcharge.

The surcharge starts after 10 years:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

On a car this age, the surcharge may already be in force. The road tax page has other engine sizes.

What a quote should tell you

When you compare, look past the headline price:

  • Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop. A plan allowing any workshop may be priced differently.
  • Named drivers: a younger driver added to the policy can raise it.
  • NCD protection: offered as an extra on some plans.
  • Excess: what you pay on each claim.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:

Their average is S$724.93. The Optra is 11% below that. Only one of them, the Toyota Sienta, is cheaper to insure. The Corolla Altis and Freed match it.

Other Chevrolets are on the Chevrolet car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks models across makes.

Before you buy

A short list to confirm before you agree a price on a used Optra:

  • COE expiry date: how many years of use you are buying.
  • Road tax: when it is next due, and at what surcharge.
  • Your own quote: priced for this car and your details.

Costs that depend on you

These have no single figure:

  • Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus elsewhere.
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and hours.
  • Parts and servicing: ask how easy parts are to find for an older car. Tyres, brakes and a battery come due.
  • Depreciation: for a used car, mostly the COE years left.

Yearly figures

For the Chevrolet Optra 1.6 (1,598cc), dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$741.72 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$642.42 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$961.77
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$586.41

A fresh COE in the October 2026 1st round was S$130,001 (Category A) or S$130,100 (Category B).
