The Chevrolet Sonic NB is a 1.4-litre car that is no longer on the new-car list. Its fixed costs are on the low side. This page shows what it costs to keep each year, and how car insurance prices move with the driver and the car.
Insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are a guide, not a quote for you.
The car on our form
The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now, so there is no list price, power or body type to give.
Our quote form prices the Chevrolet Sonic NB 1.4A, with a 1,398cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote.
Road tax
For the 1,398cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$624.42 a year. That was checked on 2026-10-19 and is before any age surcharge.
The surcharge starts after 10 years:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Check the registration date on any Sonic you look at. The road tax page covers other engine sizes.
The COE
With a 1,398cc engine, the Sonic NB 1.4A needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs a Category B COE if its power is more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These change every round; the COE page has the latest.
For a used Sonic, the years left on the COE matter more than any fresh COE price. They set how long you can keep the car.
Insurance for the standard driver
Who is priced
The Chevrolet Sonic NB price page prices:
- Car: Sonic NB 1.4A, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
The prices
11 insurers price the Sonic for that driver. The lowest premium is S$586.41 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,280.38. That is S$693.97 more, or 118% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Five insurers on our panel have no online price for this model.
At the lowest price, insurance costs about the same as the road tax. At the top of the range, it costs far more.
Excess
The excesses on this page sit in a narrow band. Most plans set S$600. One sets S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. One plan has no excess.
That makes plans easier to compare on premium alone. Even so, read the excess on the plan you choose.
When one detail changes
The price page shows the lowest price with one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$973.02, S$386.61 more
- 20% NCD: S$973.02, S$386.61 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$973.02, S$386.61 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$586.41, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$604.07, S$17.66 more
- A car 8 years old: S$545.00, S$41.41 less
The NCD makes the biggest difference: 66% more without it. A 20% NCD and a younger driver reach the same figure.
Driver age does not move the lowest price. An 8-year-old Sonic is a little cheaper to insure than the 3-year-old car on the page.
These are lowest prices. Other plans may move differently.
The NCD is also why one claim can cost more than the repair. A claim can cut the discount, and the higher premium lasts until the NCD is rebuilt. Some plans offer to protect it for an extra charge.
What to compare in a quote
A few terms are worth a look along with the premium:
- Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop. Plans that allow any workshop may cost more or less.
- Named drivers: a younger driver on the policy usually lifts the price.
- NCD protection: an optional extra on some plans.
- Excess: your share of each claim.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
Their average is S$735.99. The Sonic is 20% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure.
Other Chevrolets are on the Chevrolet car insurance page. The cheapest cars to insure page ranks models across makes.
Costs that depend on you
These have no single figure:
- Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus elsewhere.
- Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
- ERP: your routes and hours.
- Parts and servicing: for an older car, ask how easy parts are to find. Tyres, brakes and a battery come due.
- Depreciation: for a used car, mostly the COE years left.
The yearly figures
