Owning a used BMW 740d is mostly a matter of two bills: a large road tax and an insurance premium that depends heavily on who drives. Only two insurers price the 740d online, which narrows your choice. This page goes through the costs we can date: the COE, road tax and car insurance.
The insurance prices are examples, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. Your own premium depends on your details, so read them as a guide, not a quote.
The car priced here
The quote form has one entry, the BMW 740d, with a 2,979cc engine. All figures below are for that car. The new-car list has no 740d on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type on this page.
COE
The price page states that the 740d, with a 2,979cc engine above 1,600cc, needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
You will not pay that on a used car. What you pay for is the COE time that remains. Ask how many years are left, and set that against the price. The COE page has the latest results if a renewal is in view.
Road tax
For a 2,979cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$2,360.46 a year, before any age surcharge. It is the biggest fixed yearly cost on this page.
The surcharge for cars over 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
So an older 740d can pay a good deal more than the base figure. Check the registration date. The road tax page shows the working.
Insurance: two online prices
The BMW 740d price page prices this case:
- Car: 740d, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
2 insurers price the 740d online. The lowest premium is S$1,019.54 a year. The other insurer's lowest plan asks at least S$1,498.85, which is S$479.31 more, or 47% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Most insurers on the panel do not price this model online yet. They may still quote if you ask them directly, and that quote could come in above or below the two figures here. With so few online prices, extra quotes are worth the effort.
Excess
All three plans listed carry an excess of S$600, the amount you pay on each claim. If you get other quotes directly, check their excess, as it may differ. A lower premium with a higher excess is not always the better deal, because you pay the excess every time you claim.
The driver matters most
The price page shows the lowest premium after one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$2,146.43, S$1,126.89 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,717.12, S$697.58 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$2,193.25, S$1,173.71 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,210.35, S$190.81 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,594.50, S$574.96 more
- A car 8 years old: S$954.89, S$64.65 less
The young driver case costs most, at 115% more than the example. Losing your NCD comes close behind, at S$1,126.89 more. Even a 20% NCD leaves you S$697.58 above the 50% figure.
So for a 740d, who is named on the policy matters as much as the car. If a younger family member will drive it, get a quote with them named before you buy. The newer-car and older-driver rows are priced by only one insurer, so treat them with care. These are lowest prices only.
Similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:
- Audi S4 Saloon: S$1,501.01
- Audi Q7: S$1,238.58
- Audi S5: S$1,238.58
- Audi S5 SPRTback: S$1,238.58
- Audi SQ5: S$1,210.01
- Infiniti Infiniti: S$861.03
Their average is S$1,214.63. The 740d is 16% below that, and only the Infiniti is cheaper to insure. Each of the six is priced by more insurers, so their figures come from a wider field. More BMW models are on the BMW car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks many more.
Costs set by your own use
- Parking: season parking at home, plus parking at work and in town.
- Fuel: depends on your distance and pump prices.
- ERP: depends on your routes and the hours you drive.
- Servicing and repairs: on a used car, ask for the service record and what work is due soon, such as tyres, brakes or a battery.
- Depreciation: set by what you pay now and the COE years left when you sell.
