BMW 218i Active Tourer in Singapore, road tax and insurance costs

The BMW 218i Active Tourer in Singapore: road tax, its COE rule and dated insurance examples where NCD and the insurer you pick matter most.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The BMW 218i Active Tourer insures for less than many of the family cars it is compared with, at least at the lowest price. But that lowest price leans hard on two things: your no-claim discount and the insurer you choose. This page goes through the costs we can date for it, from the COE and road tax to car insurance.

Every insurance figure here is an example, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. Your premium depends on your own details. Treat these as a guide, not an offer.

The model priced

The quote form lists the BMW 218i Active Tourer with a 1,499cc engine. That is the car the figures below refer to. The new-car list has no entry for it now, so this page gives no list price, power or body type. A buyer today will be looking at a used car.

The COE

For the 218i Active Tourer's 1,499cc engine, the COE category depends on power. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These change every round, and the COE page has the latest. With a used car, the COE is already paid; ask how many years remain on it.

Road tax

LTA's formula sets road tax for a 1,499cc engine at S$683.66 a year, before any age surcharge.

The surcharge for older cars, from the 10-year mark:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Check the registration date of any car you look at, since the surcharge rises each year. The road tax page explains the formula.

The insurance picture

The BMW 218i Active Tourer price page prices this case:

  • Car: 218i Active Tourer, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

14 insurers price it for that driver. The lowest premium is S$700.28 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$2,501.33. The difference is S$1,801.05, or 257% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

That is one of the widest spreads on any price page. The dearest of the lowest plans costs more than three times the lowest premium. If you renew without comparing, you could land anywhere in that range. Some prices are estimates, so confirm the final figure on the insurer's own quote.

Excess

The excess is what you pay on each claim. Most plans for this car carry S$600. Others are S$500, S$750 or S$800. One asks S$2,500, and one has no excess at all. Read it beside the premium.

How much NCD is worth here

The price page shows the lowest premium after one change:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,236.47, S$536.19 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,179.41, S$479.13 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,236.47, S$536.19 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$700.28, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$721.59, S$21.31 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$642.42, S$57.86 less

The NCD makes a large difference. With none, the lowest premium is 77% higher. Even at 20% NCD you pay S$479.13 more than at 50%. A younger driver with three years' driving pays the same as a driver with no NCD.

If you are switching from another car, check that your NCD moves with you. The car's age, by contrast, barely moves the lowest price. An 8-year-old car comes out S$57.86 lower. These are lowest prices; other plans may react differently.

Similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:

The six average S$720.97. The 218i Active Tourer is 3% below that. Three of the six are cheaper to insure: the Corolla Altis, the Freed and the Sienta. The other three cost more. The BMW car insurance page covers the make's other models, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks a wider set.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
  • Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive.
  • Servicing and repairs: on a used car, ask for the service history and what work is due next.
  • Depreciation: set by what you pay and the COE years left when you sell.
