Keeping a BMW 216d Gran Tourer in Singapore, costs and insurance

Road tax, the COE rule and dated car insurance examples for a used BMW 216d Gran Tourer in Singapore, and what moves them.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

For one standard driver, a BMW 216D Gran Tourer can be insured for S$811.71 a year, or at least S$2,578.02, depending on the insurer. That gap is the headline for this car. This page looks at it closely, alongside road tax and the COE.

The Gran Tourer is no longer on the new-car list, so this is a guide for owners and used buyers. All insurance prices are examples read on 20 October 2026 for the driver described below. They are not a quote.

The version we priced

Our quote form lists one version: the BMW 216D Gran Tourer, with a 1,496cc engine. With no new-car list entry, there is no list price here. All figures are for this car.

Insurance first

The BMW 216d Gran Tourer price page uses these details:

  • Car: 216D Gran Tourer, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

14 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$811.71. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,578.02, which is S$1,766.31 more, or 218% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The figures come from each insurer's published rates on the dates shown on the price page. If you are renewing, set your renewal notice beside them and see where it falls.

Excess on the plans

The excess is what you pay on a claim before the insurer pays. Ten plans here carry S$600 and three carry S$800. Three more carry S$500 and two carry S$750. One plan asks S$2,500, and one asks nothing.

Read the excess with the premium. A cheaper plan with a far higher excess may not save you money if you claim.

What moves the premium

The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes, all else the same:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,563.98, up S$752.27
  • 20% NCD: S$1,367.09, up S$555.38
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,327.33, up S$515.62
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$811.71, unchanged
  • New car, registered this year: S$836.07, up S$24.36
  • Car 8 years old: S$742.90, down S$68.81

The NCD outweighs everything else. Without it, the lowest price is 93% higher. A younger driver with a smaller NCD pays hundreds more too.

By contrast, the car's age barely moves the price, and an 8-year-old Gran Tourer comes out cheaper. An older driver pays the same, with 13 insurers pricing that case. These are lowest prices; dearer plans may move by more or less.

Adding a named driver

If a younger family member will drive the car, the insurer may price them in. The young-driver figure above gives a sense of the effect. Ask for quotes with every driver named, so there are no surprises at claim time.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,496cc engine road tax of S$681.90 a year, before any surcharge.

The surcharge for older cars:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

On a used car, note the registration date so you can see when the next step comes. The road tax page has the formula for other engines.

The COE

The price page's COE section gives the rule. With a 1,496cc engine, the 216D Gran Tourer needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. For a used car, this is the price you would face to renew once the current COE ends. The COE page shows later rounds.

Similar cars for the same driver

The price page lists six cars of a similar engine size, at the same car age:

Their average lowest price is S$720.97. The Gran Tourer is 13% above that, and 5 of the six cost less to insure. The BMW car insurance page covers the brand's other models, and the cheapest cars to insure list shows a wider field.

Costs only you can estimate

These depend on your own use, so we give no figures:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus school, office and mall charges.
  • Fuel: depends on distance and pump prices.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and the hours you travel.
  • Servicing and repairs: ask for the service history on a used car. Tyres, brakes and a battery come due over the years.
  • Depreciation: what you lose depends on the price you pay, the COE life left and the later sale price.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the BMW 216D Gran Tourer, figures dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$681.90 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$811.71 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,563.98

  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$742.90
