BMW 216i Active Tourer costs to run and insure in Singapore

Running a BMW 216i Active Tourer in Singapore: COE, road tax for its 1,499cc engine and dated car insurance examples with a very wide spread.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The BMW 216i Active Tourer is a compact family car with a small 1,499cc engine. That keeps road tax modest, but the insurance prices for it vary more than for almost any car on this site. This page sets out the costs we can date: the COE, road tax and car insurance.

The insurance figures are examples, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. Your own premium depends on your details, so read them as a guide to how the costs work.

The version on the form

The quote form lists the BMW 216i Active Tourer, with a 1,499cc engine. That is the car priced below. The new-car list has no 216i Active Tourer on sale now, so this page gives no list price, power figure or body type. Most buyers will be looking at a used one.

Its COE

Every car in Singapore needs a Certificate of Entitlement. For the 216i Active Tourer, with its 1,499cc engine, the category depends on power. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These figures move each round; the COE page shows the latest.

On a used car, the COE has been paid already. What matters is how many years it has left, because the asking price should reflect them.

Road tax

For a 1,499cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$683.66 a year, before any age surcharge.

Once a car passes 10 years, the surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

If you are viewing an older car on a renewed COE, check its age against this list. The road tax page shows the working.

Car insurance: compare before you commit

The BMW 216i Active Tourer price page prices this case:

  • Car: 216i Active Tourer, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

14 insurers price it for that driver. The lowest premium is S$811.71 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$2,501.33. That is S$1,689.62 more, or 208% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Read that again: the dearest lowest plan costs over three times the lowest premium, for the same car and driver. Few cars show a gap this wide. A few prices on the page are estimates, so the insurer's own quote has the last word.

Excess

The excess is what you pay on each claim. Most plans for this car carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. One asks S$2,500 and one has no excess. Put the excess beside the premium as you compare.

What moves the lowest price

The price page shows the lowest premium after one change:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,083.90, S$272.19 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,083.90, S$272.19 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,083.90, S$272.19 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$811.71, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$836.07, S$24.36 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$742.90, S$68.81 less

Without NCD, the lowest premium rises by 34%. A 20% NCD and a younger driver both land on the same figure. An older driver pays no more than the example.

The car's age makes only a small change. A new car costs S$24.36 more and an 8-year-old one S$68.81 less. Keep in mind these are lowest prices; others on the list can move by more.

Similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:

They average S$720.97. The 216i Active Tourer costs 13% more than that. Five of the six are cheaper to insure; only the Mazda 3 costs more. Other BMW models are on the BMW car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks more.

Costs set by your own life

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus school runs, work and weekends.
  • Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and the hours you drive.
  • Servicing and repairs: ask for the service record on a used car, and what any remaining warranty covers.
  • Depreciation: set by what you pay now and the COE years left on the car when you sell it.
