BMW 218i Coupe ownership costs and insurance in Singapore

A BMW 218i Coupe in Singapore: road tax, the COE rule and dated insurance examples, where premiums for one driver differ by S$2,507.99.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

For a BMW 218i Coupe, the number that matters most is not the road tax or the COE. It is the gap between insurance quotes. For one example driver, the dearest insurer's lowest plan costs S$2,507.99 a year more than the lowest premium. This page sets that out, along with the other costs we can date.

All insurance figures are examples, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. Your own premium depends on your details. Use them to see how the costs work, not as a quote.

The car

The quote form lists the BMW 218i Coupe, with a 1,499cc engine, and that is the car priced here. It has no entry on the new-car list now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type on this page. You will find it on the used market.

Insurance: the headline

The BMW 218i Coupe price page prices this case:

  • Car: 218i Coupe, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

14 insurers price it for that driver. The lowest premium is S$700.28 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$3,208.27. That is S$2,507.99 more, or 358% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

So the dearest lowest plan costs more than four times the lowest premium, for the same car and the same driver. A gap like that is rare. It means the insurer you choose matters more than almost anything else about this car's yearly bill. A few prices on the page are estimates; confirm them on the insurer's own quote.

The excess on each plan

The excess is your share of each claim. Most plans for the 218i Coupe carry S$600. Others are S$500, S$750 or S$800. Three ask S$2,500, one asks S$3,000, and one has none. Weigh the excess with the premium, especially where premiums are close.

What your record does to the price

The price page shows the lowest premium after one change:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,381.13, S$680.85 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,179.41, S$479.13 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,360.42, S$660.14 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$700.28, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$721.59, S$21.31 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$642.42, S$57.86 less

Losing your NCD almost doubles the lowest premium: it rises by 97%. A younger driver with three years' driving pays close to the no-NCD figure. An older driver pays the same as the example.

The car's age changes the lowest price only a little. An 8-year-old 218i Coupe costs S$57.86 less, a new one S$21.31 more. As always, these are lowest prices. The dearer plans may react more sharply.

Compared with similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six cars:

The six average S$720.97. At S$700.28, the 218i Coupe is 3% below that. Three of the six cost less to insure, and three cost more. The BMW car insurance page covers other BMW models.

Road tax for the 1,499cc engine

Road tax follows engine size, and the 218i Coupe's is small. For a 1,499cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$683.66 a year, before any age surcharge.

Cars over 10 years old pay more:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

A coupe on a renewed COE may already be past the 10-year mark, so check its registration date. The road tax page shows the formula.

The COE

For the 218i Coupe's 1,499cc engine, the category turns on power. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more. The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B.

On a used car, ask how long the COE has left. That is the time on the road the asking price buys. The COE page has the newest results.

Costs that depend on how you use it

  • Parking: season parking where you live, and parking at work and in town.
  • Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and the hours you drive.
  • Upkeep: ask for the service record and check tyres, brakes and battery on a used car.
  • Depreciation: set by what you pay and the COE years left when you sell.
