Buying a used Toyota Wish in Singapore, what it costs to keep

A used Toyota Wish in Singapore: road tax and its surcharge, the Category B COE, and example insurance premiums for older cars and different drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 had no Toyota Wish on sale. So if you want one, you are buying used. That changes which costs matter most. The age of the car, the COE left on it and the road tax surcharge all come into play.

This guide takes you through them step by step, then ends with a checklist. Insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not your quote.

Step 1: know which Wish you are looking at

Our quote form lists five versions of the Wish:

  • WISH 1.8 CVT: 1,798cc
  • Wish 1.8 X: 1,794cc
  • Wish 2.0 Auto: 1,987cc
  • Wish 2.0 Deluxe: 1,987cc
  • Wish 2.0 G: 1,998cc

The insurance and road tax figures below are for the WISH 1.8 CVT (1,798cc). That is the version most of our insurers price. Check the exact version on the car's papers, because engine size sets road tax.

Step 2: check the COE

The price page's COE section says the WISH 1.8 CVT, with a 1,798cc engine above 1,600cc, needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

That figure is what a new car bid for in that round. A used Wish carries the COE it was registered with. What matters to you is how many years are left on it. When a COE runs out, the owner must renew it or deregister the car. The COE page has the latest results.

Step 3: work out the road tax

For the 1,798cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$975.16 a year, before any age surcharge. It was checked on 2026-10-19.

On a used car, the surcharge can matter a lot:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The 2.0 versions have larger engines and pay more. The road tax page gives the sum for each size.

Step 4: price the insurance

The Toyota Wish price page prices one case:

  • Car: WISH 1.8 CVT, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% NCD, no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

15 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$721.59. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,506.70. That is S$785.11 more, or 109% on top. Prices include 9% GST.

Older cars

For a used buyer, the age lines are the useful ones:

  • A car 8 years old: S$660.69, S$60.90 less
  • A car 3 years old: S$721.59, the page's standard case
  • A new car, registered this year: S$742.90, S$21.31 more

An older Wish costs less to insure at the lowest price. But some insurers stop pricing cars online past a certain age. Check how many still quote the year you are looking at.

Drivers

The lowest price with the driver changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$989.59, S$268 more
  • 20% NCD: S$989.59, S$268 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$989.59, S$268 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$721.59, the same

Losing the NCD adds 37% to the lowest price. That is the biggest change on the page. The older driver pays no more.

These are lowest prices only. Other plans can move by more or less.

The excess

Excesses on this page run from S$0 to S$3,000. The second-lowest premium, S$857.09, carries a S$2,500 excess. Most plans sit at S$500, S$600, S$750 or S$800. Weigh the excess against the premium.

Step 5: compare with similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:

They average S$783.18. The Wish is 8% below it. Two of them are cheaper to insure, and the Kona matches it. Other Toyota models are on the Toyota car insurance page.

Before you pay a deposit

  • COE expiry date: confirm the years left and what renewal would involve.
  • Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge and the insurance age.
  • Engine size: confirm the version, since 1.8 and 2.0 pay different road tax.
  • Loan status: make sure there is no loan still owed on the car.
  • Service records: ask for the history and check it against the maker's schedule.
  • Inspection: have the car checked by a workshop you choose before you commit.
  • Insurance quote: price the exact car and year before you pay anything.
  • Your NCD: get proof of your NCD from your current insurer.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus parking at work and in town.
  • Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on routes and timing.
  • Repairs: an older car may need tyres, brakes, a battery and other parts over time.
  • Depreciation: on a used car, it turns on what you pay and the COE years left.

Summary of yearly costs we can show
