Toyota Avanza costs in Singapore, from road tax to insurance

The yearly costs of a Toyota Avanza 1.5 in Singapore: road tax, COE category and dated car insurance prices for one standard driver.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Toyota Avanza appeals to families who want a lot of car for the money. Before you buy one, it helps to know what it costs year by year. This review covers the COE, road tax and car insurance, one at a time.

The insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show how prices compare. They are not a quote for you.

The Avanza we priced

There is no entry for the Avanza on the new-car list we hold, so you will not find a list price here. Our quote form prices the Avanza 1.5, with a 1,495cc engine. That is the version most of our insurers quote.

Which COE it needs

The Avanza 1.5's 1,495cc engine puts it under a power test. If its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, it needs a Category A COE. If its power is above that, it needs Category B.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. Prices change each round. See the COE page for the latest.

A used Avanza comes with its COE. The number of years left on it is worth checking before you agree a price.

Paying road tax

For a 1,495cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$681.32 a year. That is before any age surcharge, as checked on 2026-10-19.

Once a car passes 10 years old, the surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

You can check other engine sizes on the road tax page.

Insurance: the example driver

The Toyota Avanza price page prices the car for one person:

  • A 40-year-old married driver with an office job
  • 10 to 19 years of driving and a 50% no-claim discount (NCD), with no claims
  • An Avanza 1.5 registered 3 years ago, for private use
  • Comprehensive cover, authorised workshop repairs, no add-ons

On that example, 15 insurers give a price. The lowest premium is S$604.07 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,335.76. That is S$731.69 more, or 121% on top. Prices include 9% GST.

For the same family and the same car, each insurer's lowest plan can sit far apart. Comparing several quotes is the simplest way to see where you fall.

Mind the excess

Every plan has an excess: the amount you pay on a claim before cover starts. Most plans on the Avanza page carry S$600. Others carry S$500, S$750 or S$800, and one has S$0. A few carry S$2,500 or S$3,000.

Check this number next to every premium. A low premium with a high excess can cost more if you claim.

Dates and estimates

Each price on the page carries an "as at" date. That is the day the insurer's published price table was read. A price dated today comes from the insurer's live rates. Some figures are marked as estimates; check those on the insurer's own quote before you rely on them.

The NCD in the example is worth understanding too. It is a discount you build up with claim-free years, and a claim usually cuts it back. That is why the no-NCD prices further down are so much higher.

How the price shifts

The page re-runs the price with one change at a time. The lowest price each time:

  • No NCD (0%): S$976.44, which is S$372.37 more
  • 20% NCD: S$976.44, which is S$372.37 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$976.44, which is S$372.37 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$604.07, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$622.34, which is S$18.27 more
  • Car 8 years old: S$552.91, which is S$51.16 less

Of all these, a missing NCD costs most. The lowest price climbs 62% without it. A newer car adds a little. An older Avanza costs slightly less to insure at the lowest price.

These figures show the lowest prices only. Dearer plans may move by more or less.

Set against similar cars

The page puts six similar cars beside the Avanza, for the same driver and car age:

The six average S$773.50. The Avanza is 22% below that, and none of them is cheaper to insure. The Toyota car insurance page lists other Toyotas, and this list ranks a wider range of cars by insurance price.

Costs that depend on you

These vary from household to household, so no figure is given.

  • Parking: your HDB or condo season parking, and charges at work, malls and elsewhere.
  • Petrol: depends on how far you go and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive them.
  • Servicing and wear: routine servicing, then tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service record on a used car.
  • Depreciation: what you pay, the COE years left and the value when you part with the car.

Yearly costs in brief

For the Toyota Avanza 1.5:

  • Road tax: S$681.32 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$604.07 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$976.44
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$552.91

As a one-off, the COE in the October 2026 1st round was S$130,001 for Category A or S$130,100 for Category B.
