The Toyota Aqua is a small petrol-electric hatchback, and most of the ones you will find in Singapore are used cars. This page sets out what it costs to keep one: the COE, road tax and car insurance.
Each insurance figure is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. The price you are offered will turn on your own details.
The version on our form
The Aqua has no entry on the new-car list we hold, so this review gives no list price. Our quote form prices the Aqua Hybrid 1.5, with a 1,496cc engine. That is the version most of our insurers quote, and every figure below is for it.
COE: Category A or B
With a 1,496cc engine, the Aqua Hybrid 1.5 falls under the power test. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is higher, it needs a Category B COE.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. Both move every round, and the COE page carries the newest results.
On a used Aqua, the COE is already paid. What you are really buying is the years left on it. Check that number on any car you look at.
Road tax each year
Road tax follows engine size. For the Aqua's 1,496cc engine, LTA's formula comes to S$681.90 a year. That is the base figure, before any age surcharge, checked on 2026-10-19.
A car more than 10 years old pays extra on top:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The road tax page lets you look up other engine sizes.
Insurance for a standard driver
The Toyota Aqua price page prices one fixed case:
- The car: Aqua Hybrid 1.5, registered 3 years ago, private use
- The cover: comprehensive, authorised workshop repairs, no options
- The driver: 40 years old, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
- The record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
For that case, 15 insurers price the Aqua. The lowest premium is S$664.47 a year. At the top, the insurer whose lowest plan costs most asks at least S$1,477.37. That is S$812.90 more, or 122% on top. Every price includes 9% GST.
Put simply, the dearest insurer's lowest plan costs more than twice the lowest premium. For one driver and one car, that is a wide spread.
Excess: the other number
The excess is what you pay towards a claim before the insurer pays the rest. On the Aqua page, most plans set it at S$600. Some sit at S$500 or S$750, and one plan has none. A handful go up to S$2,500 or S$3,000.
When two premiums look close, the excess can decide which one costs less in a year when you claim. Some prices on the page are marked as estimates, so confirm those with the insurer.
What moves the premium
Holding everything else the same, the price page changes one detail at a time. The lowest prices it finds:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,013.23, up S$348.76
- 20% NCD: S$1,013.23, up S$348.76
- Aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,013.23, up S$348.76
- Aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$664.47, unchanged
- New car, registered this year: S$684.56, up S$20.09
- Car 8 years old: S$608.20, down S$56.27
Losing the NCD has the largest effect: the lowest price rises 52%. A 20% NCD and a younger, newer driver land on the same figure. An older driver with a long record pays the same as the standard driver. And an 8-year-old Aqua is a little cheaper to insure than a 3-year-old one.
These are only the lowest prices. Plans further up the list may change by different amounts.
Compared with similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars. Their lowest prices:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class: S$749.93
Together they average S$773.50. The Aqua sits 14% below that. Only one of the six, the Honda Freed, is cheaper to insure for this driver. Other Toyotas are on the Toyota car insurance page.
The costs that are yours to work out
Several costs depend on how and where you drive, so no single figure fits.
- Parking: season parking where you live, plus what you pay at work and when out. Ask your HDB or condo car park for its rate.
- Fuel: the Aqua is a hybrid, so it draws on petrol and its electric motor. What you spend depends on your distance and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on which gantries you pass and when.
- Servicing: routine checks, tyres and brakes, and on a hybrid, ask about the hybrid battery's condition and any warranty left on it.
- Depreciation: shaped by your purchase price, the COE years left and the value when you sell or deregister.
