If you are weighing up a Toyota Tank, the yearly costs are a good place to start. Its 996cc engine keeps road tax low. Insurance for a settled driver starts at S$545.00, and that floor does not move with the car's age. What does move it is the driver's record.
This guide takes each cost in turn. The insurance figures are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car, not a quote.
The version we price
The new-car list has no entry for the Tank on sale now, so there is no list price, power or body type to give here. The quote form lists the Tank 1.0, with a 996cc engine. All the insurance figures below are for it.
COE category
The price page states the rule for the Tank 1.0. With its 996cc engine, it needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs a Category B COE if its power is more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has the latest round.
A registered car carries its COE until a fixed date. Check that date on the papers before you agree a price.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$390.22 a year for the 996cc engine, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge applies to cars over 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Even at the top step, a small base keeps the dollar amount modest. The road tax page has other engine sizes.
Insurance: the standard case
The Toyota Tank price page prices one driver and car:
- Car: Tank 1.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
12 insurers price the Tank for that driver. The lowest premium is S$545.00. The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,049.65. The gap is S$504.65, or 93% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Four insurers on our panel have no online price for the Tank yet. If you already hold a policy with one of them, a direct quote is the way to include it.
What to know about the excess
The excess is the amount you pay towards each claim. Ten plans here carry S$600. A few sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. Three plans ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. Every plan on this page has an excess. A plan with a low premium and a high excess may cost more overall in a year you claim.
The driver moves the price, the car's age does not
Here is the lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$910.44, S$365.44 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$910.44, S$365.44 more
- 20% NCD: S$826.61, S$281.61 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$545.00, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$545.00, the same
- A car 8 years old: S$545.00, the same
With no NCD, the lowest price goes up 67%. A young driver aged 27 pays the same. A 20% NCD helps a little, but still leaves the price well above the standard driver's.
The other three lines hold at S$545.00. An older driver, a new car and an 8-year-old car all start at the same floor. So if you are choosing between a newer and an older Tank, insurance is unlikely to tip the choice at the lowest price.
These are lowest prices only. Plans further up the list may move by other amounts.
Protecting the NCD
An NCD builds up with each claim-free year. A claim usually cuts it, and the lines above show what that costs on this car. Some plans offer NCD protection for an extra charge. Ask what it costs and what it covers before you add it.
Against similar small cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six comparable cars:
- Chery A1: S$774.43
- Daihatsu Copen: S$718.87
- Audi A1: S$660.69
- Audi Q2: S$660.69
- Citroen C3: S$604.07
- Chery QQ: S$545.00
Their average lowest price is S$660.63. The Tank comes in 18% below that. None of the six is cheaper to insure, though the Chery QQ matches it. Other Toyotas are on the Toyota car insurance page.
