The Toyota Sienta is a compact MPV, and many come up for sale both new and used. Whichever you are looking at, the running costs follow the same pattern: COE, road tax and insurance. This guide puts dated figures on each one and shows how the insurance price changes with the car's age.
Treat every premium below as an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own quote will reflect your own details.
New Sientas on the list
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 shows four versions. All are petrol-electric hybrids made in Japan, with a 1,490cc engine and 114bhp:
- Sienta Hybrid 1.5 Z 7-Seater
- Sienta Hybrid 1.5 G 7-Seater
- Sienta Hybrid 1.5 X 7-Seater
- Sienta Hybrid 1.5 Elegance
Our quote form lists three versions, which also covers older cars: the Toyota Sienta (1,496cc), the Sienta Elegance (1,496cc) and the Sienta Hybrid (1,490cc). The insurance prices here are for the 1,496cc Sienta, the version most insurers quote.
List prices as listed
On 2026-10-10, with COE included in the list price that day:
- Hybrid 1.5 Z 7-Seater: S$186,700
- Hybrid 1.5 G 7-Seater: S$188,700
- Hybrid 1.5 X 7-Seater: S$191,500
- Hybrid 1.5 Elegance: S$213,888
These move with the COE. Ask for a current price in writing, and compare what each quote includes.
Its COE
For the 1,496cc Sienta, the price page gives this rule. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. If its power is more, it needs a Category B COE.
The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. See the COE page for later rounds.
A used Sienta carries whatever COE is left on it. When that runs out, the owner must renew it or take the car off the road. Check the COE expiry date on any used car before you agree a price.
Road tax, and the surcharge on older cars
For a 1,496cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$681.90 a year before any age surcharge. The current hybrids have a 1,490cc engine, so check their exact figure on the road tax page.
The surcharge matters most if you buy an older car:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Insurance for the standard driver
The Toyota Sienta price page prices this case:
- Car: Toyota Sienta (1,496cc), registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, nothing added
15 insurers price the Sienta on those details. That is a wide field: only one insurer on our panel has no online price for it yet.
The lowest premium is S$604.07. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,335.76, which is S$731.69 more, or 121% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
The lowest price is for a plan that allows any workshop or authorised workshops. Most other plans on the page are for authorised workshops.
Excesses differ widely
The excess is the share of a claim you pay. Most plans here ask S$600. The range runs from S$0 to S$3,000, and one of the lower premiums comes with a S$2,500 excess. Weigh the excess against the premium, not the premium alone.
How age changes the price
This is the part that matters for a used car. The price page shows the lowest price when one thing changes:
- A new car, registered this year: S$622.34, S$18.27 more, 14 insurers pricing
- The standard 3-year-old car: S$604.07
- A car 8 years old: S$552.91, S$51.16 less
So on these details, an older Sienta is a little cheaper to insure at the lowest price. But fewer insurers price cars online once they pass a certain age. If you are looking at a much older car, check how many will still quote it.
How the driver changes the price
The same table shows the effect of the driver:
- No NCD (0%): S$976.44, S$372.37 more
- 20% NCD: S$976.44, S$372.37 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$976.44, S$372.37 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$604.07, the same, 14 insurers pricing
Losing your NCD is the costliest change: the lowest price rises by 62%. A driver aged 65 pays the same lowest price as the standard driver. These are lowest prices; other plans may move differently.
Similar cars, side by side
The price page compares six similar cars for the same driver and car age:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class: S$749.93
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
Their average lowest price is S$773.50. The Sienta comes in 22% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. More Toyota models are on the Toyota car insurance page.
Before you pay a deposit on a used Sienta
- COE expiry: how many years remain, and what renewing would mean for you.
- Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge once the car passes 10 years.
- Version: hybrid or petrol, and the engine size on the log card, since it changes road tax and insurance.
- Service records: ask to see them.
- Insurance quote first: get a price for that exact car before you commit.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: your HDB or condo season parking, plus parking away from home.
- Petrol: depends on your mileage and the pump price. The current versions are hybrids.
- ERP: set by your routes and timing.
- Servicing and wear: tyres, brakes and a battery come due over the years.
- Depreciation: depends on what you pay and how long the COE has left.
