Is a Toyota Prius right for you on cost in Singapore

The Toyota Prius judged on cost in Singapore: list prices, a Category B COE, road tax of S$973.98 and dated insurance prices for several drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

Verdict on cost: the Prius sits in the middle of its group on insurance, and its 1,797cc engine puts it in Category B for the COE. For an experienced driver with a full no-claim discount, the insurance bill holds steady for an older driver and moves little with the car's age. The reasons, and the catches, follow.

Every insurance figure is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own price will depend on your details. Read the figures as a guide, not a quote.

What is on sale

The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 shows the Prius as a hatchback made in Japan. Two versions are listed, both petrol-electric hybrids with 138bhp:

  • Prius Hybrid 1.8 X: 1,797cc
  • Prius Hybrid 1.8: 1,798cc

Our quote form also has older versions, including the Prius C 1.5 with a 1,496cc engine. The insurance figures here are for the Prius with a 1,797cc engine, the version most insurers on our panel quote.

The list price

As listed on 2026-10-10, COE included:

  • Hybrid 1.8 X: S$188,600
  • Hybrid 1.8: S$202,888

Both move with each COE round. Check what each offer includes before you compare the totals.

COE category

The price page is direct about this. With a 1,797cc engine, above 1,600cc, the Prius needs a Category B COE. In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100. That matters because Category B premiums can differ from Category A in any round. The COE page has the latest results.

Road tax

For the 1,797cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$973.98 a year, before any age surcharge.

Past 10 years, a surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The older Prius C, with a smaller engine, pays less road tax. The road tax page has the figure for other sizes.

Insurance for the page's driver

The Toyota Prius price page prices this profile:

  • Car: Prius, 1,797cc, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

13 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$793.75 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,506.70, S$712.95 more, or 90% on top. All prices include 9% GST. Three insurers on our panel have no online price for the Prius yet.

Excess

The excess, the part of a claim you pay, runs from S$0 to S$3,000 on this page. S$600 is the most common. The lowest-priced plan allows any workshop or an authorised one.

Who it suits on cost

An experienced driver with full NCD. The standard driver's lowest price is S$793.75. A driver aged 65 with 20 or more years' driving pays the same.

A buyer of a used Prius. A car 8 years old costs S$726.77 at the lowest price, S$66.98 less than the example.

A buyer of a new one. A car registered this year costs S$817.19, S$23.44 more. The new-car line has 12 insurers rather than 13.

Who may pay more

A driver without NCD. With no NCD, the lowest price rises to S$1,043.74, S$249.99 more, or 31%. With 20% NCD, it is the same S$1,043.74.

A younger driver. A driver aged 27 with three years' driving and 30% NCD also pays S$1,043.74.

These are lowest prices only. Dearer plans may move by other sums.

Against similar cars

The price page sets six similar cars beside it, for the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$783.18. The Prius is 1% above it, and three of the six cost less to insure. Those three all have 1,591cc engines. Other Toyota models are on the Toyota car insurance page.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Will anyone young drive it? The young driver line costs more, so add them to a quote first.
  • Is your NCD safe? Losing it is the single biggest step in the price.
  • How long will you keep it? Road tax steps up after 10 years, and the COE has a fixed term.
  • New or used? An older Prius costs less to insure, but check the COE time left.

Running costs that are up to you

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus work and town.
  • Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price. The hybrid pairs the petrol engine with an electric motor.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and times.
  • Servicing: follow the maker's schedule, and ask what the warranty covers, including the hybrid battery.
  • Depreciation: depends on what you pay and what the car fetches later.
