Owning a Toyota Picnic in Singapore, with road tax and insurance costs

The Toyota Picnic 2.0 in Singapore: its Category B COE, road tax on a 1,998cc engine and car insurance prices for different drivers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

If you have a Toyota Picnic, or have seen one for sale, the useful question is what it costs to keep each year. This guide answers that one cost at a time. It covers the COE, road tax and car insurance, then the costs that depend on you.

The insurance figures were read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. They are a guide, not a quote.

The Picnic we priced

The new-car list has no entry for the Picnic on sale now, so this guide gives no list price, power or body type. Our quote form lists one version, the Picnic 2.0, with a 1,998cc engine. All insurance figures below are for it.

COE

The price page states that the Picnic 2.0, with a 1,998cc engine, is above 1,600cc. It needs a Category B COE, which closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

That figure changes with every round, and the COE page shows the latest. For a registered car, the COE has an end date. Find it on the car's papers before you agree a price, since it sets how long the car can stay on the road as it is.

Road tax: the base and the surcharge

LTA's formula gives S$1,209.76 a year for a 1,998cc engine. That is before any age surcharge.

The surcharge adds a share of the base tax once a car is more than 10 years old:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

If you plan to keep an older Picnic going, budget for the step that applies to its age. The road tax page has other engine sizes.

Insurance: the standard driver's prices

The Toyota Picnic price page prices this driver and car:

  • Car: Picnic 2.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that driver:

  • 13 insurers give a price
  • The lowest premium is S$742.90
  • The insurer whose lowest plan is highest asks at least S$1,294.07
  • The gap is S$551.17, or 74% on top

All prices include 9% GST. Three insurers on our panel have no online price for the Picnic yet.

Excess on these plans

The excess is the part of each claim you cover yourself. Twelve plans here carry S$600. A few are at S$500, S$750 or S$800, three are at S$2,500 and one is at S$3,000. A plan with a large excess can look good on premium alone, so put the two figures side by side.

How drivers and car age change it

Holding everything else steady, the price page changes one detail and shows the lowest price:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,012.89, S$269.99 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,012.89, S$269.99 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,012.89, S$269.99 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$742.90, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$764.82, S$21.92 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$666.79, S$76.11 less

Three quite different drivers share one floor here: no NCD, a 20% NCD, and a driver aged 27. Each pays 36% more than the standard driver at the lowest price. A driver aged 65 pays the same as the standard driver.

An older car does not cost more here. The 8-year-old car is S$76.11 cheaper to insure at the lowest price than the 3-year-old one.

Plans above the lowest may react differently. Ask for the full list, not only the first price.

What to check on a plan

  • Workshop: these prices assume repairs at an authorised workshop. A plan that lets you pick any workshop may be priced differently.
  • Excess: the figure you would pay on each claim, and whether a young driver pays a higher one.
  • NCD: whether the plan protects it, and what that costs on top.
  • Named drivers: who else may use the car under the policy.

Against six similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page shows these lowest prices:

Their average lowest price is S$933.59. The Picnic is 20% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. Other Toyota models are on the Toyota car insurance page.

The costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at home, plus parking at work and elsewhere.
  • Petrol: your mileage and pump prices.
  • ERP: the gantries on your routes and the hours you pass them.
  • Servicing: routine servicing plus tyres, brakes and a battery over the years. Ask for the service history.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what is left when you sell, which turns on the COE years remaining.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the Picnic 2.0 (1,998cc):

  • Road tax: S$1,209.76 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$742.90 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD or a driver aged 27: from S$1,012.89
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$666.79

For reference, Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
