The Toyota Passo comes with small engines, and that shows in its yearly bills. Road tax on the 1.0-litre version is modest, and insurance for a settled driver starts low. This guide takes each cost in turn: the COE, road tax, insurance and the costs that depend on you.
The insurance prices are examples read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver. Your own quote will depend on your answers.
Passo versions on the quote form
The new-car list has no entry for the Passo on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power or body type. Our quote form lists three versions:
- Passo 1.0L X: 996cc
- Passo 1.3L G: 1,297cc
- Passo 1.5: 1,495cc
The insurance figures below are for the 1.0L X, the version most insurers quote. The other two have larger engines, so their road tax and insurance will differ.
How the COE works for it
The price page sets out the rule for the Passo 1.0L X, with its 996cc engine. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These move at every bidding round, and the COE page has the latest. On a car that is already registered, check when its COE ends.
Road tax
For the 996cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$390.22 a year, before any age surcharge. That is the main saving a small engine brings.
The surcharge begins once a car passes 10 years:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Since the base is small, the surcharge is small in dollars too. The road tax page gives the figures for the 1.3L and 1.5.
Car insurance for the standard driver
The Toyota Passo price page prices one case:
- Car: Passo 1.0L X, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For that driver, 13 insurers price the Passo. The lowest premium is S$545.00. The insurer whose lowest plan sits highest asks at least S$1,049.65. That is S$504.65 more, or 93% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Three insurers on our panel have no online price for the Passo yet. If one of them already covers you, ask it directly for a quote, and set that beside the prices on the page.
Check the excess
The excess is what you pay on a claim before cover starts. Twelve plans on this page carry S$600. Three ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. The lowest excess here is S$500. Every plan has one, so check it next to the premium.
The driver matters more than the car's age
The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes:
- No NCD (0%): S$953.92, S$408.92 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$924.97, S$379.97 more
- 20% NCD: S$826.61, S$281.61 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$545.00, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$545.00, the same
- A car 8 years old: S$545.00, the same
The pattern is plain. Every change to the driver's record moves the price up. With no NCD, the lowest price rises 75%. A young driver pays close to that. A driver with 20% NCD sits in between.
The car's age does not move the lowest price at all. A new Passo, a 3-year-old one and an 8-year-old one all start at S$545.00. That makes the NCD the figure to protect.
These are lowest prices only. Higher plans may move by different amounts, and fewer insurers quote some cases.
Next to similar small cars
The price page sets six cars beside the Passo, for the same driver and car age:
- Chery A1: S$774.43
- Daihatsu Copen: S$718.87
- Audi A1: S$660.69
- Audi Q2: S$660.69
- Citroen C3: S$604.07
- Chery QQ: S$545.00
Their average lowest price is S$660.63. The Passo comes in 18% below it. None of the six is cheaper to insure, and the Chery QQ matches it. Fewer insurers price the Chery A1 and the Daihatsu Copen. More Toyota models are on the Toyota car insurance page.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, and what you pay at work and in town.
- Petrol: your mileage and the pump price.
- ERP: your routes and the hours you use them.
- Servicing: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over time. Ask for the car's service record.
- Depreciation: what you pay set against the value left when you sell, which depends on the COE years remaining.
