Toyota Ist in Singapore, the costs of owning and insuring one

A Toyota Ist in Singapore, cost by cost: which COE it needs, yearly road tax and dated car insurance examples for one stated driver.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Toyota Ist is a small hatchback that you will now find on the used market rather than in showrooms. If you are costing one up, the yearly bills are what to look at. This page goes through the COE, road tax and insurance, then the costs that depend on how you use the car.

The insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They help you compare. They are not your quote.

Versions on the form

The new-car list has no entry for the Ist on sale now, so there is no list price to give. Our quote form has two versions:

  • Ist 1.3: 1,298cc
  • Ist 1.5 X: 1,496cc

Most of our insurers quote the Ist 1.3. The figures below are for that version.

Which COE category

For the Ist 1.3, with its 1,298cc engine, the category depends on power. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These figures change every round, and the COE page has the latest. On a used Ist, the COE is already part of the price; check how many years it has left.

Road tax

LTA sets road tax by engine capacity. For the 1,298cc Ist 1.3, the formula gives S$565.78 a year, before any age surcharge. That is a modest figure next to larger cars.

The surcharge applies once a car is more than 10 years old:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The 1.5 X has a bigger engine and pays a little more. The road tax page has the figures for other engine sizes.

Insurance for one driver

The Toyota Ist price page prices one case:

  • Car: Ist 1.3, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: at an authorised workshop, no add-ons

For that case, 13 insurers give a price. The lowest is S$604.07 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,249.45, which is S$645.38 more, or 107% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

So the dearest insurer charges more than twice the lowest price for the same car and driver. Three insurers on our panel have no online price for the Ist yet.

When you compare, check that the quotes match on cover type, workshop and add-ons. The page assumes comprehensive cover at an authorised workshop, with nothing extra.

Excess

Each plan sets an excess, the part of a claim you pay yourself. On this page it runs from S$500 to S$3,000, and most plans carry S$600. On a small car with a low premium, a high excess can be a large share of what a minor claim costs. Read both figures.

How the price moves

The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes and the rest stays the same:

  • No NCD (0%): S$963.58, S$359.51 more
  • 20% NCD: S$963.58, S$359.51 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$963.58, S$359.51 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$604.07, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$622.34, S$18.27 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$552.91, S$51.16 less

Losing the NCD has by far the biggest effect: the lowest price goes up 60%. The 20% NCD and younger driver cases come to the same figure. Age alone makes no difference for the driver of 65. An 8-year-old Ist is cheaper to insure. These are lowest prices only, and other plans can move by other amounts.

Compared with similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six cars with engines of a similar size:

Their average lowest price is S$694.41. The Ist is 13% below it. Two of the six are cheaper to insure: the Qashqai and the Kicks e-Power. Other Toyota models are on the Toyota car insurance page.

Costs that depend on you

These vary by owner, so we put no figure on them.

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus work and weekend parking. Check your own block's rate.
  • Petrol: depends on your distance and pump prices.
  • ERP: set by your routes and travel times.
  • Servicing and repairs: tyres, brakes and a battery over the years, plus regular servicing. On a car no longer sold new, ask for its service history.
  • Depreciation: shaped by your buying price, the COE years left and what the car fetches later.

Yearly costs in brief

For the Ist 1.3, with dates as shown:

  • Road tax: S$565.78 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, one driver: from S$604.07 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$963.58
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$552.91

For a new COE in the October 2026 1st round: S$130,001 (Category A) or S$130,100 (Category B).
