Costs of owning and insuring a Toyota Esquire GI in Singapore

The Toyota Esquire GI in Singapore: COE category, road tax and insurance examples for one stated driver, with every figure dated.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

This page is for anyone weighing up a Toyota Esquire GI and wanting to know the yearly bill. The GI is not on the new-car list now, so the figures here are about running one rather than buying new. We go through the COE, road tax and insurance, then the costs that depend on you.

Insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Use them to see how costs compare, not as your own quote.

The GI on our quote form

The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now, so there is no list price here. Our quote form has one version:

  • Esquire GI: 1,986cc

Every figure that follows is for that version, the one most insurers on our panel quote.

Which COE it needs

With its 1,986cc engine, above 1,600cc, the Esquire GI needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

If you buy used, the COE comes with the car and ends on a fixed date. Ask how long is left. The COE page shows the latest round.

Road tax for the 1,986cc engine

LTA's formula sets road tax by engine size. For this engine it comes to S$1,195.68 a year, before any surcharge for age.

Older cars pay more. The surcharge begins once a car is past 10 years:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page shows the yearly amount for other engine sizes.

Insurance on the price page

The Toyota Esquire GI price page uses one set of answers:

  • Car: Esquire GI, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office-based, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no extras

On those answers, 13 insurers give a price. The lowest is S$742.90 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,522.43, which is S$779.53 more, or 105% on top. All figures include 9% GST.

In other words, the top price is more than twice the bottom one for the same car and driver. Three insurers on our panel have no online price for the GI yet.

A few things are worth checking when you set quotes side by side. Look at the workshop terms, since the page assumes an authorised workshop. Look at what the plan adds or leaves out, such as a courtesy car or windscreen cover. And look at whether the price shown is for the cover type you want. The quote form lets you change each of these.

Looking at the excess

The excess is the share of a claim you pay before the insurer pays the rest. On this page it runs from S$0 to S$800, and S$600 is the most common. When two premiums are close, the excess can be what separates them. Read each plan's excess beside its premium before you compare.

One change at a time

The price page shows how the lowest price moves when a single detail changes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,061.20, S$318.30 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,061.20, S$318.30 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,061.20, S$318.30 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$742.90, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$764.82, S$21.92 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$666.79, S$76.11 less

Without an NCD the lowest price is 43% more, the largest change on the list. The 65-year-old pays exactly what the 40-year-old pays. An 8-year-old car comes out lower. Remember that only the lowest price is shown; other plans may react differently.

How it compares with similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six cars with engines of around two litres:

Their average lowest price is S$933.59. The Esquire GI comes in 20% below it, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. You can find other Toyota models on the Toyota car insurance page.

Costs we cannot put a number on

Some costs depend on the owner, not the car.

  • Parking: season parking at home, and what you pay at work or in town. Your HDB or condo office can give the rate.
  • Petrol: rises and falls with your mileage and pump prices.
  • ERP: depends on where you drive and at what time.
  • Servicing and repairs: follow the service schedule, and ask a seller for the car's records. Tyres, brakes and a battery come up in time.
  • Depreciation: the drop in value over the COE years left, which depends on your buying and selling price.

Summary of the yearly figures

For the Esquire GI, with dates as given:

  • Road tax: S$1,195.68 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, example driver: from S$742.90 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,061.20
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$666.79

And for a new COE, Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
