You are most likely to come across a Toyota Esquire on the used market, since it is not on the new-car list now. That puts the focus on what it costs each year once you have it. This review covers the COE, road tax and car insurance, then the costs that turn on how you use the car.
Every insurance price below is an example for one stated driver, taken on 20 October 2026. It shows the pattern of costs. It is not the premium you will be offered.
The version we price
There is no new-car list entry for the Esquire, so we give no list price. Our quote form carries one version:
- Esquire Hybrid 1.8 GI: 1,797cc
All the figures below are for that version, which most of our insurers quote.
COE for the Esquire
The Esquire Hybrid 1.8 GI has a 1,797cc engine, above 1,600cc. It needs a Category B COE. In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100.
On a used car, the COE is already part of what you pay. What matters is how many years of it remain. Bidding results change every round, and the COE page has the most recent ones.
Road tax
LTA works out road tax from engine size. For the 1,797cc Esquire, the formula gives S$973.98 a year, before any age surcharge.
Because many Esquires on the road are not new, the age surcharge is worth knowing. It applies once a car is more than 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Check the registration date of any car you look at, since it sets when the surcharge begins. The road tax page has the figures for other engine sizes.
Car insurance: the standard case
The Toyota Esquire price page prices one driver and one car:
- Car: Esquire Hybrid 1.8 GI, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: 40 years old, married, in an office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: at an authorised workshop, with no options
For that case, 14 insurers quote a price. The lowest is S$793.75 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,506.70. That is S$712.95 more, or 90% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Only two insurers on our panel have no online price for this model. So there is a wide field to compare, and a wide spread of prices within it.
Excess on each plan
Next to every premium is an excess, the amount of each claim you pay yourself. Most plans on this page carry S$600. The full range runs from S$0 to S$3,000. A cheap premium with a high excess can cost more in a year when you claim, so compare the pair.
How the price shifts
The price page also shows the lowest price when one detail changes and the others stay the same:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,034.17, S$240.42 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,034.17, S$240.42 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$1,034.17, S$240.42 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$793.75, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$817.19, S$23.44 more
- A car 8 years old: S$726.77, S$66.98 less
The NCD makes the biggest difference. With none, the lowest price is 30% more. The younger driver lands on that same figure. Age alone does not move the price for the 65-year-old. An older Esquire is a little cheaper to insure. These are lowest prices only; other plans can change by other amounts.
Compared with similar cars
The price page sets six cars beside the Esquire, for the same driver and car age. Their lowest prices:
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class: S$861.03
- BMW 5 Series: S$861.03
- Hyundai Avante: S$622.34
- Kia Cerato: S$660.69
- Lexus NX: S$972.39
The six average S$783.18 at their lowest price. The Esquire costs 1% more than that. Three of them are cheaper to insure: the Kona, the Avante and the Cerato. Other Toyotas are on the Toyota car insurance page.
What depends on how you use it
These costs vary too much between owners to put a figure on them.
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking away from home. Check your own block's season rate.
- Petrol: set by how far you go and the pump price. The hybrid system pairs an electric motor with the petrol engine.
- ERP: depends on your daily routes and the hours you drive.
- Servicing and repairs: on a used car, ask for the service record. Tyres, brakes and the batteries need attention over the years.
- Depreciation: shaped by what you pay, the COE years left and what the car sells for later.
The yearly figures together
For the Esquire Hybrid 1.8 GI, dated as shown:
- Road tax: S$973.98 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
- Insurance, standard driver: from S$793.75 a year (20 October 2026)
- Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,034.17
