The Toyota Crown Athlete is not on the new-car list we hold, so in Singapore you will be looking at a used car. Its 2.5-litre engine shapes two of its biggest yearly costs: road tax and the COE category. This page sets out those and the car insurance.
Each insurance price is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. What you pay will depend on your details.
The version priced
The Crown Athlete has no entry on the new-car list we hold, so no list price is given here. Our quote form prices the Crown Athlete 2.5, with a 2,499cc engine. That is the version most of our insurers quote.
COE category
With a 2,499cc engine, above 1,600cc, the Crown Athlete 2.5 needs a Category B COE. In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100.
Each round sets a new figure, shown on the COE page. On a used Crown Athlete, the COE is already on the car. The years left on it decide how long you can drive before you renew or deregister.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 2,499cc engine a road tax of S$1,797.42 a year, before any age surcharge. This was checked on 2026-10-19.
The surcharge grows once the car is past 10 years:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
With a large engine, the surcharge adds up fast on an older car. Check the registration date before you buy. The road tax page covers other engine sizes.
Insurance for a standard driver
The Toyota Crown Athlete price page prices one example:
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years' driving
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Car: Crown Athlete 2.5, registered 3 years ago, private use
- Cover: comprehensive, authorised workshop, no options
13 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$742.90 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,622.76. That is S$879.86 more, or 118% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
So, for one driver and one car, the dearest insurer's lowest plan costs more than twice the lowest premium. That is the main reason to get several quotes.
Excess
The excess is the part of a claim you pay yourself. Most plans here carry S$600. Others carry S$500 or S$800. One carries S$2,500, and one has none.
A low premium with a high excess may cost more if you claim. Read the two together.
How current each price is
Every price has an "as at" date: the day the insurer's price table was read. A price with today's date comes from live rates. Some are marked as estimates, and those are worth confirming with the insurer.
How the price reacts
The page shows the lowest price when one detail changes:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,212.45, S$469.55 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,212.45, S$469.55 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,212.45, S$469.55 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$742.90, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$764.82, S$21.92 more
- A car 8 years old: S$666.79, S$76.11 less
The NCD is the largest lever. Without it, the lowest price is 63% higher. NCD builds over claim-free years and usually drops after a claim. An older Crown Athlete costs less to insure at the lowest price.
These are lowest prices. Other plans may move differently.
Against similar cars
The page sets out six similar cars, for the same driver and car age:
- Honda Odyssey: S$811.71
- Mitsubishi Outlander: S$861.03
- Audi RS 3 Sedan: S$1,310.08
- Audi RS 3 Sportback: S$1,310.08
- Chevrolet Captiva: S$764.82
- Chevrolet Malibu: S$764.82
Their average is S$970.42. The Crown Athlete comes in 23% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. The Toyota car insurance page covers other Toyota models.
Checks on a used Crown Athlete
Some answers decide what a particular car will cost you more than the model does:
- Years left on the COE: the fewer there are, the sooner you face renewing or deregistering.
- Registration date: past 10 years, the road tax surcharge applies, and on a S$1,797.42 base that is a real sum.
- Your NCD: an NCD from your current car usually moves with you, and the table above shows how much it is worth.
- Quotes with your details: ask more than one insurer and read the excess on each.
Costs that vary by owner
These depend on how you use the car, so no figures are given.
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and elsewhere.
- Petrol: depends on your mileage and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive.
- Servicing and repairs: routine servicing, then tyres, brakes and a battery as they wear. On an older car, ask for the service history.
- Depreciation: tied to what you pay, the COE years left and the value at the end.
