The Renault Megane SASE comes in a 1.6 and a 2.0 on our quote form, and the 1.6 is the one most insurers price. This page works through its yearly costs: the COE rule, road tax and car insurance from 13 insurers. It finishes with the costs that depend on how you use the car.
All insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not a quote.
Two versions
There is no Megane SASE on the new-car list we read, so no list price appears here. Our quote form has two versions:
- Megane SASE 1.6: 1,598cc
- Megane SASE 2.0: 1,998cc
The insurance figures are for the 1.6. The 2.0 has a larger engine, so its road tax is higher and its premiums may differ. Check which one you are looking at.
COE for the 1.6
For the Megane SASE 1.6, with a 1,598cc engine, the category depends on power:
- Category A if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less: S$130,001 in the October 2026 1st round
- Category B if it is more: S$130,100 in the same round
On a used car, the COE has been paid. What you pay for is the years left on it, so check the expiry date. The COE page has the latest round.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 1,598cc engine a road tax of S$741.72 a year, before any age surcharge. The 2.0 pays more; see the road tax page.
A surcharge applies once a car is more than 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%

The range
13 insurers price it. Three on our panel have no online price for it yet.
The lowest premium is S$700.28 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,343.63: S$643.35 more, or 92% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
In plain terms, the dearest insurer's lowest plan costs close to double the lowest one.
The excess
All plans here carry an excess of S$800 or less. Most carry S$600, some S$500, S$750 or S$800, and one has none. That keeps the premiums fairly easy to compare, but check each one anyway.
Several prices are marked as estimates. Confirm those on the insurer's own site, where you finish buying.
How the price changes
The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes:
- No NCD (0%): S$984.55, S$284.27 more
- 20% NCD: S$984.55, S$284.27 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$984.55, S$284.27 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$700.28, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$721.59, S$21.31 more
- A car 8 years old: S$642.42, S$57.86 less
No NCD, 20% NCD and the younger driver all reach S$984.55, 41% above the standard driver. The older driver pays the same as the standard profile. A new car costs a little more to insure at the lowest price and an 8-year-old one a little less. For the driver aged 65 and the new car, 12 insurers quote.
These are lowest prices only. Dearer plans may move by more or less.
Points to check on a plan
- Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop. Plans that allow any workshop may cost a different amount.
- Named drivers: check who may drive and what a younger driver adds.
- NCD protection: an add-on on some plans, not included here.
- Car age: if the car is older than the profile, check that each insurer still prices it online.

- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42

Their average lowest price is S$724.93. The Megane SASE, at S$700.28, is 3% below it. Three of the six cost less to insure: the Corolla Altis, the Freed and the Sienta. The other three cost more. Other Renaults are on the Renault car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks models across makes.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
- Petrol: depends on how far you drive and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive.
- Servicing and repairs: follow the maker's schedule. On a used car, ask for the service record and check that parts are easy to source.
- Depreciation: depends on what you pay, the COE years left and what the car fetches later.
