The Renault Clio comes with a small engine in its most common version, and that keeps its road tax low. Its insurance draws a lot of interest too: 15 insurers price it online for our standard driver. This page goes through those figures and the COE rule, then the costs that depend on you.
The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are a guide to the range, not your quote.
Four versions on our form
There is no Clio on the new-car list we read, so this page has no list price. Our quote form carries four versions:
- Clio 1.2: 1,149cc
- Clio 1.4: 1,388cc
- Clio 1.5 dCi: 1,461cc
- Clio 1.6: 1,598cc
The insurance figures are for the 1.2, the version most of our insurers quote. Each larger engine pays more road tax, so check which version you are looking at.
The COE
For the Clio 1.2, with its 1,149cc engine, the COE category depends on power:
- Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. S$130,001 in the October 2026 1st round.
- Category B: if it is more. S$130,100 in the same round.
COE figures change at each bidding round. A used Clio carries its COE, so ask how many years are left. The COE page shows the latest round.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 1,149cc engine a road tax of S$478.38 a year, before any age surcharge. The other three versions pay more; their figures are on the road tax page.
A surcharge is added once a car is more than 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Insurance for the Clio
The Renault Clio price page prices this profile:
- Car: Clio 1.2, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: at an authorised workshop, no add-ons
Plenty of choice
15 insurers give an online price, and only one on our panel does not. The lowest premium is S$642.42 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,237.52: S$595.10 more, or 93% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
So the same driver can pay close to twice as much, depending on the insurer.
The excess
The two lowest premiums carry very different excesses: S$600 for one and S$2,500 for the next. Most other plans carry S$600. Some carry S$500, S$750 or S$800, a few S$2,500 or S$3,000, and one none. If you claim, a high excess can wipe out the saving on a lower premium.
How the price changes
The price page shows the lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$944.57, S$302.15 more
- 20% NCD: S$944.57, S$302.15 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$944.57, S$302.15 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$642.42, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$660.69, S$18.27 more
- A car 8 years old: S$586.41, S$56.01 less
Three lines share the same lowest price, 47% above the standard driver: no NCD, 20% NCD and the younger driver. An older driver pays the same as the standard profile. A new Clio costs a little more to insure at the lowest price, and an 8-year-old one a little less. For the driver aged 65 and the new car, 14 insurers quote.
These are lowest prices only. Dearer plans may change by more or less.
Things to look at in a plan
- Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop. Plans that allow any workshop may cost a different amount.
- Named drivers: check who may drive and what adding a driver costs.
- NCD protection: an add-on on some plans, not included in these prices.
- Estimates: a few prices on the page are marked as estimates. Confirm them on the insurer's own site.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:
- Audi A1: S$660.69
- Audi Q2: S$660.69
- Honda Jazz / Fit: S$622.34
- Mitsubishi Attrage: S$622.34
- Nissan Kicks e-Power: S$590.12
- Toyota C-HR: S$552.91
Their average lowest price is S$618.18. The Clio, at S$642.42, is 4% above it. Four of the six cost less to insure, and the two Audis cost more. The gaps here are small, so a rival is not much cheaper to insure. The Renault car insurance page has other Renaults.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when you go out.
- Fuel: depends on the version, your mileage and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive.
- Servicing and repairs: follow the maker's schedule. On a used Clio, ask for the service history and check how easily parts can be sourced.
- Depreciation: depends on what you pay, the COE years left and the price you sell at.
