The BMW X5 is no longer on the new-car list, and our quote form carries several versions of it. This page is for anyone who wants to know what one costs to keep. It sets out the COE, road tax and car insurance, with the figures we can show.
Every insurance price is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. It is not a quote. What you pay depends on your own details.
X5 versions on our quote form
The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now. So this page gives no list price, power or body type.
Our quote form carries four X5 versions:
- BMW X5 3.0: 2,993cc
- BMW X5 xDrive25d: 1,995cc
- BMW X5 xDrive35i: 2,979cc
- BMW X5 xDrive40i: 2,998cc
The figures below are for the xDrive40i, the version most of our insurers quote. The xDrive25d has a much smaller engine, so its road tax will be lower.
Car insurance
The standard driver
The BMW X5 price page prices this profile:
- Car: X5 xDrive40i, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
What insurers ask
15 insurers price the X5 for that driver. The lowest premium is S$855.70 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$5,174.21. That is S$4,318.51 more, or 505% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
That is a very wide range: the top figure is around six times the bottom one. For a car like this, the choice of insurer may be the biggest single lever you have on the yearly bill.
One insurer on our panel has no online price for this model yet.
The excess
Each plan sets an excess, which you pay first on any claim. Most plans on this page set S$600. Others set S$500, S$750 or S$800. Three plans set S$2,500 and one S$3,000. One plan has no excess.
The higher figures are a real sum to find after an accident. Compare them along with the premiums.
How the price shifts
The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,362.66, S$506.96 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,362.66, S$506.96 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,362.66, S$506.96 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,014.79, S$159.09 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,221.67, S$365.97 more
- A car 8 years old: S$800.21, S$55.49 less
Three changes land on the same figure. No NCD, a 20% NCD and a younger driver all lead to S$1,362.66, which is 59% above the page's lowest price.
A new X5 costs a good deal more to insure than a 3-year-old one. An 8-year-old car costs a little less. That matters if you are deciding between a newer and an older used car.
These are lowest prices. Dearer plans may change by other amounts.
The COE
With a 2,998cc engine, above 1,600cc, the X5 xDrive40i needs a Category B COE. In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100.
COE prices are reset at every bidding round. The COE page has the latest figures.
For a used X5, check when the COE runs out. The years left set how long you can keep the car as it is, and shape what it is worth.
Road tax
For the xDrive40i's 2,998cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$2,382.76 a year. This was checked on 2026-10-19 and is before any age surcharge.
That sum is a fixed yearly cost. Older cars pay more on top:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The other X5 versions have different engine sizes, so their road tax differs. You can look them up on the road tax page.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:
- Audi Q7: S$1,238.58
- Audi S4 Saloon: S$1,501.01
- Audi S5: S$1,238.58
- Audi S5 Sportback: S$1,238.58
- Audi SQ5: S$1,210.01
- Infiniti: S$861.03
They average S$1,214.63. The X5 is 30% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. The Infiniti comes closest.
So, at the lowest price, the X5 is one of the less costly 3-litre cars to insure on this list. Other BMWs are on the BMW car insurance page. The cheapest cars to insure page ranks models across the market.
What depends on you
Several costs have no fixed figure:
- Parking: season parking at home, plus the office and outings. Check that your usual car park lots suit the car.
- Petrol: depends on your distance, the engine and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on routes and hours.
- Servicing and parts: the maker's schedule, then tyres, brakes and a battery as the years go on. Ask what tyres for the car cost.
- Depreciation: the drop in value while you own the car, tied to its COE years left.
