BMW X4 in Singapore and the yearly cost of road tax and insurance

What the BMW X4 M40i costs to keep in Singapore: a Category B COE, road tax for 2,998cc and dated car insurance prices for one driver.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

A 3-litre BMW X4 carries some of the higher fixed costs on Singapore roads. Road tax rises steeply with engine size, and fewer insurers price cars like this online. This page sets out what can be counted, so you can see the yearly bill before you commit.

Each insurance price below is an example for one stated driver, as of 20 October 2026. It is a guide, not a quote. Your own figure depends on your age, record and the exact car.

The version priced

The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here.

Our quote form prices the BMW X4 as the X4 M40i, with a 2,998cc engine. That is the version most of our insurers quote. Other X4 versions may have smaller engines and so lower road tax. Their premiums may also differ.

Road tax: the big fixed cost

For a 2,998cc engine, LTA's formula comes to S$2,382.76 a year. That was checked on 2026-10-19, before any age surcharge.

That sum is due every year, whatever your mileage. It also grows as the car ages past 10 years:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

If you are weighing an older X4, check how close it is to those steps. The road tax page shows the sums for other engine sizes.

The COE

With a 2,998cc engine, above 1,600cc, the X4 M40i needs a Category B COE. In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100.

COE prices are set at each bidding round. The COE page has the latest results. On a used X4, the years left on the COE matter most.

Insurance for the standard driver

The BMW X4 price page prices one driver and car:

  • Car: X4 M40i, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

Only 7 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$1,364.67. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$6,726.49. That is S$5,361.82 more, or 393% on top. Every price includes 9% GST.

Nine insurers on our panel have no online price for this model. With so few prices to choose from, each quote you get counts for more.

Excesses

The excess is what you pay first on each claim. On this page it ranges from none at all on one plan to S$2,500 on the dearest. Between those, plans set S$500, S$600 or S$800.

Because the premiums are high, a plan with a lower excess may be worth a closer look. Compare both figures before you choose.

What changes the price

Here is the lowest price when one detail changes, with all else the same:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,734.10, S$369.43 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,734.10, S$369.43 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,734.10, S$369.43 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,482.37, S$117.70 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,444.82, S$80.15 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$1,247.70, S$116.97 less

Losing the NCD costs most, at 27% more. A younger, newer driver ends up at the same lowest figure. Even a 20% NCD gives no saving over none at the lowest price.

An older driver pays more, and so does a new car. An 8-year-old X4 is cheaper to insure than the 3-year-old one on the page.

These are the lowest prices only. Higher-priced plans may react differently.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six similar 3-litre cars:

Their average lowest price is S$1,214.63. The X4 is 12% above that. Five of the six cost less to insure; only the Audi S4 Saloon costs more.

Other BMWs are on the BMW car insurance page. The cheapest cars to insure page ranks the models at the other end of the scale.

Costs that depend on you

Some costs have no single figure because they depend on use.

  • Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus parking at work and when you go out.
  • Petrol: a larger engine and your mileage both play a part, along with pump prices.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and hours.
  • Servicing and parts: the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery in time. Larger wheels and tyres can cost more to replace. Ask what any warranty covers.
  • Depreciation: how much value the car loses depends on what you pay and the COE years left.

Yearly costs we can show

For the BMW X4 M40i (2,998cc), with dates as shown:

  • Road tax: S$2,382.76 a year before any age surcharge (checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$1,364.67 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,734.10
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$1,247.70

For a new car, Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
