The BMW 740Li is a large luxury sedan, and on the used market it can cost far less to buy than it did new. Keeping it running is another matter. Road tax is high, and insurance quotes vary widely. This page lays out the costs we can date for the 740Li: the COE, road tax and car insurance, and what makes each one rise or fall.
All insurance figures are examples. They were read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own premium will reflect your own details, so read these as a guide.
Which 740Li
The quote form has one version, the BMW 740Li, with a 2,979cc engine. It is the car priced on this page. There is no 740Li on the new-car list now, so no list price, power figure or body type appears here.
The COE you inherit
The price page states that the 740Li, with a 2,979cc engine above 1,600cc, needs a Category B COE. In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100.
When you buy a used 740Li, its COE comes with it. The years left on that COE are a large part of the car's value. A low asking price may simply reflect a COE that is about to run out. Ask for the expiry date and do the sums before you commit. If you might renew, the COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
For the 2,979cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$2,360.46 a year, before any age surcharge.
If the car is over 10 years old, the surcharge applies:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
On a high base like this, each step adds a real sum. Check where the car's registration date falls, and see the road tax page for how the figure is worked out.
What it costs to insure
The BMW 740Li price page prices this example:
- Car: 740Li, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
12 insurers price the 740Li for that driver. The lowest premium is S$1,061.44 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$3,770.17, which is S$2,708.73 more, or 255% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
For a single car and driver, that is a striking range. It means the insurer you choose can matter more than almost any detail of the car. A few prices on the page are estimates, so check the final figure on the insurer's own quote.
Excess
The excess is your share of each claim. Most 740Li plans carry S$600. Others sit at S$500 or S$800, one asks S$2,500, and one has no excess. Read it alongside the premium, since a lower premium can come with a higher excess.
How the lowest price responds
The price page lists the lowest premium after a single change:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,494.48, S$433.04 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,494.48, S$433.04 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,494.48, S$433.04 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,097.74, S$36.30 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,093.38, S$31.94 more
- A car 8 years old: S$1,002.61, S$58.83 less
Your NCD is the main factor. With none, the lowest premium is 41% higher. At the lowest price, 20% NCD saves nothing over none, and a young driver with three years' driving pays the same.
The other changes are small. An older driver and a newer car each add little, and an 8-year-old 740Li costs S$58.83 less than the example. These are lowest prices only. The plans above them can react quite differently, so look at the full list with your own details.
Similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:
- Audi S4 Saloon: S$1,501.01
- Audi Q7: S$1,238.58
- Audi S5: S$1,238.58
- Audi S5 SPRTback: S$1,238.58
- Audi SQ5: S$1,210.01
- Infiniti Infiniti: S$861.03
Their average lowest price is S$1,214.63. The 740Li is 13% below that, and only the Infiniti is cheaper to insure. Other BMW models are on the BMW car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks a wider set.
Costs that vary with the owner
- Parking: season parking at home, plus work and town parking. A long sedan fits standard lots, but check any tight car park you use often.
- Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and the hours you drive.
- Servicing and repairs: on a used car, ask for the full service record. Find out what work is due soon and get a price for it.
- Depreciation: set by what you pay now and the COE years left when you sell.
