Three numbers shape what a used BMW 740i costs you each year. The COE time left on it, the road tax its engine attracts, and the insurance premium you can find. This page puts a dated figure on each, where we have one, and shows what moves them.
The insurance figures are examples, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. Your own premium depends on your details. Treat these as a guide, not an offer.
The car
The quote form lists one version, the BMW 740i, with a 2,979cc engine. That is the car priced below. The new-car list has no 740i on sale now, so this page has no list price, power figure or body type.
Number one: the COE
The price page states that the 740i, with a 2,979cc engine above 1,600cc, needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
On a used 740i, the COE was bought by an earlier owner. The time left on it is what you are buying, so it should weigh heavily in the price you agree. Ask for the expiry date in writing, and check it against the car's registration papers before you pay a deposit. The COE page has the latest results if you may renew.
Number two: road tax
For the 2,979cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$2,360.46 a year, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge on cars over 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
On a car of this size, the surcharge adds a noticeable sum each year once it starts. Check the registration date, and see the road tax page for the working.
Number three: car insurance
The BMW 740i price page prices this case:
- Car: 740i, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
11 insurers price it for that driver. The lowest premium is S$1,019.54 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$3,770.17. That is S$2,750.63 more, or 270% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Unlike the COE and road tax, this is the number you have most control over. The same car and driver can pay several times as much depending on the insurer. A few prices are estimates, so confirm them on the insurer's own quote.
The excess
Each plan sets an excess, the part of a claim you pay. Most 740i plans carry S$600. Others sit at S$500 or S$800, one asks S$2,500, and one has none. Compare it next to the premium. A plan that looks a little dearer may cost you less over a year in which you claim, if its excess is lower. Ask too what each plan covers, such as where repairs are done.
What changes the premium
The price page shows the lowest premium after one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,471.66, S$452.12 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,471.66, S$452.12 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,471.66, S$452.12 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,097.74, S$78.20 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,093.38, S$73.84 more
- A car 8 years old: S$954.89, S$64.65 less
Losing your NCD adds 44% to the lowest premium. A 20% NCD and a younger driver with three years' driving both land on the same figure. The older driver and the newer car each add a smaller amount.
For a used buyer, an 8-year-old 740i is S$64.65 cheaper at the lowest price than the 3-year-old example. These are lowest prices only. Plans above them may move by different amounts, so check the full list for your own case.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:
- Audi S4 Saloon: S$1,501.01
- Audi Q7: S$1,238.58
- Audi S5: S$1,238.58
- Audi S5 SPRTback: S$1,238.58
- Audi SQ5: S$1,210.01
- Infiniti Infiniti: S$861.03
Their average is S$1,214.63. The 740i is 16% below that, and only the Infiniti costs less to insure. Other BMW models are on the BMW car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks a wider set.
The costs you will set yourself
- Parking: season parking at your block or condo, plus parking at work, malls and hotels.
- Petrol: depends on how far you drive and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and when you travel.
- Servicing and repairs: on a used car, ask for the service history. Check what is due soon, such as tyres, brakes or a battery, and get a price for it.
- Depreciation: shaped by what you pay and the COE years left when you sell.
