A used BMW 735Li can look like a lot of car for the money. The asking price is only part of the story, though. Its 3,600cc engine sets a high road tax, and only eight insurers price it online. This page takes each cost in turn, with a date on every figure: the COE, road tax and car insurance.
Insurance figures are examples, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. A different driver or car will get a different price. Use them as a guide.
The 735Li we priced
The quote form has one version, the BMW 735Li, with a 3,600cc engine. It shares that engine size with the BMW 735i. The new-car list has no 735Li on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type here.
COE
The price page states that the 735Li, with a 3,600cc engine above 1,600cc, needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
A used 735Li comes with its COE already paid. The years left on it are what you are really buying. If the COE is close to expiry, you face a choice between renewing and scrapping, so ask for the date up front. The COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
Engine size sets road tax, and 3,600cc is large. LTA's formula gives S$3,323.50 a year, before any age surcharge.
Older cars pay more:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
At this base, the surcharge on an older car adds a large amount each year. Check the registration date, and use the road tax page to see the sums.
Car insurance
The BMW 735Li price page prices this example:
- Car: 735Li, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
8 insurers price it for that driver. The lowest premium is S$1,061.44 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$4,082.63. The gap is S$3,021.19, or 285% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
That spread is close to four to one. With only eight insurers in the list, skipping even one could mean missing the lower price. Several figures on the page are estimates, so the insurer's own quote has the final word. Ask too what each plan includes, as cover can differ between plans at similar prices.
Excess
Every plan has an excess, the part of a claim you pay. For the 735Li, they range from S$500 to S$3,000. Most sit at S$600 or S$800, and a few ask S$2,500. No plan here has a zero excess. Look at it before you look at the premium.
How the price shifts
The price page lists the lowest premium after one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,428.19, S$366.75 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,428.19, S$366.75 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,428.19, S$366.75 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,159.93, S$98.49 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,093.38, S$31.94 more
- A car 8 years old: S$1,010.32, S$51.12 less
With no NCD, the lowest premium is 35% higher. A 20% NCD or a young driver gets the same figure. A driver aged 65 pays S$98.49 more, a little more than on the 735i.
Car age makes little difference. An 8-year-old car is S$51.12 below the example. These are lowest prices only; the dearer plans may move by more or less. If your own case differs on several points at once, such as a younger driver with a newer car, the changes do not simply add up. Next to similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists five cars with large engines:
- Chrysler 300: S$1,859.03
- Mercedes-Benz CLS: S$1,071.54
- BMW 735i: S$1,061.44
- Lexus LS: S$933.67
- Mitsubishi Pajero: S$836.07
The five average S$1,152.35. The 735Li is 8% below that and level with the 735i. Two cars, the Lexus LS and the Mitsubishi Pajero, cost less to insure. The BMW car insurance page lists the make's other models, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks a wider set.
Costs that depend on how you use it
- Parking: season parking at home, plus work and town parking. Check that a long sedan fits the lots you use most.
- Petrol: depends on your distance and pump prices.
- ERP: depends on your routes and timings.
- Repairs and servicing: on an older car, ask for the full service record and what work is due next.
- Depreciation: set by what you pay and the COE years left when you sell.
