20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

For a used BMW 735i, the yearly bill to watch is road tax. With a 3,600cc engine, it is far higher than the insurance in the example below. If you are thinking of keeping one on the road, here is what we can date for the 735i: the COE, road tax and car insurance.

The insurance figures are examples, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. Your own premium will follow your own details. Use these to understand the costs, not as a quote.

The car

The quote form has one version, the BMW 735i, with a 3,600cc engine. The new-car list has no 735i on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type on this page.

The COE

The price page states that the 735i, with a 3,600cc engine above 1,600cc, needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

With a used car, the COE is already paid, and its remaining years are part of what you buy. Ask for the expiry date. If the car will need a renewed COE, check the COE page for the latest results.

Road tax: the big one

For 3,600cc, LTA's formula gives S$3,323.50 a year, before any age surcharge. That is the largest yearly figure on this page by a wide margin.

The surcharge on cars over 10 years old adds more:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

A 735i on the road today may well be past the 10-year mark, so check where its registration date puts it. On a base this high, every step of the surcharge is a large sum. The road tax page shows how it is worked out.

Insurance for the example driver

The BMW 735i price page prices this case:

  • Car: 735i, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

11 insurers price it for that driver. The lowest premium is S$1,061.44 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$4,082.63. That is S$3,021.19 more, or 285% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The dearest lowest plan costs almost four times the lowest. So while road tax is fixed by the engine, the insurance bill depends heavily on where you buy it. A few figures on the page are estimates, and the insurer's own quote has the final price.

Excess

The excess is what you pay towards each claim. Most 735i plans carry S$600, with others at S$500 or S$800. A few ask S$2,500, one asks S$3,000, and one has none. Read the excess together with the premium.

How the lowest price moves

The price page shows the lowest premium after one change, all else the same:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,428.19, S$366.75 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,428.19, S$366.75 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,428.19, S$366.75 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,097.74, S$36.30 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,093.38, S$31.94 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$1,010.32, S$51.12 less

The NCD is the main mover, at 35% more with none. A 20% NCD and a younger driver both land on the same figure as no NCD. The older driver and the newer car add only small sums.

For a used 735i, the 8-year-old line is the closest match, at S$51.12 below the example. An even older car may differ again. These are lowest prices only, and the plans above them can respond differently.

Similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page compares five cars with large engines:

The five average S$1,152.35. The 735i is 8% below that. It matches the 735Li, and two of the five, the Lexus LS and the Mitsubishi Pajero, are cheaper to insure. Other BMW models are on the BMW car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks a wider set.

Costs that depend on you

  • Parking: season parking at home, plus parking at work and around town.
  • Petrol: depends on how far you drive and the pump price. A large engine is worth keeping in mind here.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive.
  • Repairs and servicing: an older car can need more work. Ask for the service record and check how parts are sourced.
  • Depreciation: set by what you pay and the COE years left when you sell.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the BMW 735i, dated:

  • Road tax: S$3,323.50 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)

  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,428.19

For a COE renewal, Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round. No list price is shown, as the 735i is not on the new-car list.
