BMW 725d in Singapore, its COE, road tax and insurance costs

Costs of a used BMW 725d in Singapore: road tax on its 1,998cc engine, a Category B COE and dated insurance examples where NCD adds 82%.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

A flagship sedan with a mid-sized engine is an unusual mix, and it shows in the BMW 725d's costs. Its road tax is far lower than a big-engined 7 Series would pay, but its insurance is not low. This page sets out what we can date for the 725d: the COE, road tax and car insurance.

All insurance figures here are examples. They were read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver and car. Your own details will give a different price, so read them as a guide.

The car priced

The quote form has one version, the BMW 725d, with a 1,998cc engine. The new-car list has no 725d on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type here. Any 725d you find will be a used car.

Its COE

The price page states that the 725d, with a 1,998cc engine above 1,600cc, needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

On a used car the COE has been paid already. You are buying the time left on it, so ask for the expiry date and weigh it against the price. If you plan to renew, check the COE page for the latest results.

Road tax

For the 1,998cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$1,209.76 a year, before any age surcharge. A 7 Series with a larger engine pays much more, so the engine size matters here.

The age surcharge, for cars over 10 years old:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Check the registration date. An older 725d on a renewed COE may already be paying a surcharge. The road tax page explains the sums.

The insurance example

The BMW 725d price page prices one case:

  • Car: 725d, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

10 insurers price it for that driver. The lowest premium is S$1,061.44 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$3,039.75. That is S$1,978.31 more, or 186% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The dearest lowest plan, then, costs close to three times the lowest premium. One figure on the page is an estimate. The insurer's own quote has the final price. It is also worth asking each insurer what the plan covers, such as the workshop you can use and any courtesy car, since plans at similar prices can differ in what they include.

Excess

The excess is what you pay towards each claim. Most 725d plans carry S$600, with one at S$500. A few ask S$2,500, one asks S$3,000, and one has none. When premiums look close, check the excess before choosing.

What NCD and age do to the price

The price page shows the lowest premium after one change:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,932.17, S$870.73 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,631.25, S$569.81 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,498.92, S$437.48 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,070.66, S$9.22 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,070.66, S$9.22 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$1,010.32, S$51.12 less

NCD makes the biggest difference by far. With none, the lowest premium is 82% higher. Even at 20% NCD you pay S$569.81 more than at 50%. A younger driver with three years' driving pays S$437.48 more.

The car's age and the older driver barely move the figure. For a used buyer, an 8-year-old 725d costs S$51.12 less at the lowest price than a 3-year-old one. These are lowest prices only; dearer plans may move by more.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:

Their average is S$878.01. The 725d costs 21% more, and all six are cheaper to insure. The BMW car insurance page covers other BMW models, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks a wider set.

Costs you will need to estimate

  • Parking: season parking at home, plus work and town parking. A large sedan fits standard lots, but check any tight car park you use often.
  • Fuel: depends on how far you drive and pump prices.
  • ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive.
  • Servicing and repairs: on a used car, ask for the full service record and what work is due soon.
  • Depreciation: set by what you pay now and the COE years left when you sell.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the BMW 725d, dated:

  • Road tax: S$1,209.76 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$1,061.44 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,932.17
  • Insurance, car 8 years old: from S$1,010.32

For a COE renewal, Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round. No list price is shown, as the 725d is not on the new-car list.
