Owning a BMW 5 Series in Singapore, from COE to car insurance

The BMW 5 Series in Singapore by cost: list prices, its Category B COE, road tax and car insurance for different drivers, all with dated figures.

20 Oct 2026 · 6 min read

A BMW 5 Series is a big step up in purchase price from a family sedan. What is less obvious is how the yearly costs compare once you have paid for it. This piece sets out each cost that the facts let us put a number on.

Insurance prices here are examples for one stated driver, as read on 20 October 2026. They are not a quote. Your own price depends on your age, record and the car you pick.

The 5 Series line-up

The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 has four versions on sale. All are made in Germany, listed under the luxury body type, and all are petrol-electric mild hybrids with a 1,998cc engine:

  • Sedan 520i: 188bhp
  • Sedan 520i M Sport: 188bhp
  • Sedan 530i Signature: 255bhp
  • Touring 520i M Sport: 188bhp

The quote form covers far more, because older 5 Series cars stay on the road for years. It lists many more versions, from the 520i and 520d to the 530e, the 535d and the 540i xDrive M Sport. Engines run from 1,991cc to 2,998cc. The insurance figures below are for the 520i M Sport (1,998cc), the version most insurers quote.

List prices

As listed on 2026-10-10, with COE included that day:

  • Sedan 520i: S$388,888
  • Sedan 520i M Sport: S$398,888
  • Touring 520i M Sport: S$408,888
  • Sedan 530i Signature: S$410,888

These prices shift with each COE round. A figure from a showroom today may not match. If you compare offers, check what each includes before you look at the total.

Which COE it needs

With a 1,998cc engine, above 1,600cc, the 520i M Sport needs a Category B COE. In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100.

Bidding results change twice a month. The COE page shows the latest round.

Road tax at 1,998cc

Road tax rises steeply with engine size. For the 520i M Sport's 1,998cc engine, LTA's formula comes to S$1,209.76 a year, before any age surcharge.

Cars older than 10 years pay more:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Many older 5 Series cars on the form have bigger engines, near 3,000cc, so their road tax is higher again. The road tax page shows the sum for any engine size.

Insurance: what the standard driver sees

The BMW 5 Series price page prices one case:

  • Car: 520i M Sport, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

15 insurers price this car for that driver. The lowest premium is S$861.03 a year. At the far end, the insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$3,039.75. That is S$2,178.72 more, or 253% on top. Prices include 9% GST.

That is a very wide gap, much wider than for many smaller cars. On a car like this, comparing can make a large difference to the yearly bill. One insurer on the panel has no online price for the 5 Series yet.

The excess on each plan

The excess is what you pay towards each claim before the insurer pays the rest. Most plans here carry S$600. One has none, and others go up to S$2,500 or S$3,000. The dearest plan on the page also carries a S$2,500 excess. Read the excess with the premium, not after it.

When the driver or the car changes

The price page shows the lowest premium when one thing changes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,334.09, which is S$473.06 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,334.09, which is S$473.06 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,334.09, which is S$473.06 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$861.03, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$886.61, which is S$25.58 more
  • Car 8 years old: S$787.96, which is S$73.07 less

Losing the NCD has the biggest effect. With no NCD, the lowest price is 55% higher. A young driver with 3 years' driving lands at the same lowest figure. An older driver pays the same as the standard case. An 8-year-old car is the least costly to insure of these. These are lowest prices only, so other plans may move differently.

Similar cars on the same terms

The price page lists six similar cars, for the same driver and car age. Their lowest prices:

The average of the six is S$878.01. The 5 Series sits 2% below it. Two of the six are lower, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class matches it. Other BMW models are on the BMW car insurance page.

Costs that turn on how you use it

Several costs have no single figure, because they depend on you:

  • Parking: season parking at home, and what you pay at the office or in town. A condo or HDB rate is worth checking before you buy.
  • Petrol: depends on your mileage and pump prices. The new versions are mild hybrids, so they pair the engine with a small electric motor.
  • ERP: set by your routes and the times you travel.
  • Servicing and parts: follow BMW's schedule, and ask what any service package and warranty include. Tyres and brakes come due over time.
  • Depreciation: the gap between what you pay and what the car fetches when you sell. It depends on both figures.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the 520i M Sport, with figures dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$1,209.76 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$861.03 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,334.09
  • Insurance, new car: from S$886.61
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$787.96

And the one-off costs, for reference: list prices from S$388,888 as listed on 2026-10-10, and a Category B COE of S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
