Owning a BMW 420i M Sport in Singapore means three big recurring questions. What COE is it on, what is the road tax, and what will insurance cost? This page answers each with dated figures. As the car is not on the new-car list, it is written mainly for buyers of used cars and for current owners.
The insurance figures are examples, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. Change the driver or the car and the price changes. Use them as a guide only.
The 420i M Sport on the form
The quote form has one entry: the BMW 420i M Sport, with a 1,998cc engine. The figures here are for that car. The new-car list has no entry for this model now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type on this page.
The COE
The price page states that the 420i M Sport, with a 1,998cc engine above 1,600cc, needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
On a used car, the COE has been paid already. The years left on it are a large part of what the asking price buys. Ask for the expiry date, and check the COE page if a renewal is likely.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$1,209.76 a year for a 1,998cc engine, before any age surcharge.
Once a car passes 10 years, the surcharge applies:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
An older 420i M Sport on a renewed COE could pay well above the base figure. The registration date tells you which step applies. The road tax page has the formula.
What the insurance looks like
The BMW 420i M Sport price page prices this example:
- Car: 420i M Sport, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
11 insurers price the car for that driver. The lowest premium is S$1,027.39 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$3,994.05. That is S$2,966.66 more, or 289% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Few items in this car's running costs swing as much as that. With 11 insurers to choose from, comparing is worth the time at each renewal. A few prices on the page are estimates, so check the final figure on the insurer's own quote.
Your share of a claim
The excess is the part of each claim you pay. Most plans here carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800, one asks S$2,500, and one has none. Look at the excess and the premium together. If you rarely claim, a higher excess may matter less to you; if you park in busy car parks and expect small knocks, it may matter more.
The effect of one change
The price page lists the lowest premium after a single change:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,517.28, S$489.89 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,517.28, S$489.89 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,438.34, S$410.95 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,027.39, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,027.39, the same
- A car 8 years old: S$1,010.32, S$17.07 less
The no-claim discount is the main factor, with 48% more to pay without it. A younger driver with three years' driving pays S$410.95 more.
The car's age barely registers at the lowest price. A new car costs the same as a 3-year-old one, and an 8-year-old car only S$17.07 less. So for a used buyer, an older car does not bring much of an insurance saving here. These are lowest prices only, and other plans may differ. Get quotes on the actual car, with its real registration date, before you agree a price.
How it stacks up
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:
- Lexus NX: S$972.39
- Lexus RX: S$972.39
- Mercedes-Benz GLC: S$925.60
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class: S$861.03
- Toyota Voxy: S$793.75
- Toyota Harrier: S$742.90
The six average S$878.01. The 420i M Sport is 17% above that, and all six are cheaper to insure. For the rest of the range, see the BMW car insurance page, or the cheapest cars to insure page for a wider ranking.
Costs only your habits decide
- Parking: season parking where you live, plus what you pay elsewhere.
- Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and the time of day you drive.
- Servicing and repairs: ask for the service history on a used car, and what work is due next.
- Depreciation: shaped by the price you pay and the COE years left when you sell.
