The BMW 225xe pairs a premium badge with a small engine. In Singapore, a small engine means lower road tax, and that is one of the few running costs set entirely by the car. This page puts dated figures on the 225xe's COE, road tax and car insurance, and shows what makes each one move.
Every insurance figure here is an example, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. A different driver gets a different price. Use them to understand the costs rather than as a quote.
The version on our form
The quote form has one entry: the BMW 225xe, with a 1,499cc engine. The new-car list has no 225xe on sale now, so there is no list price, power figure or body type on this page. A 225xe you buy today will be a used car.
COE: A or B
For the 225xe, with its 1,499cc engine, the COE category depends on power. The price page states it needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.
The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. These change each round, and the COE page lists the latest.
On a used car, an earlier owner paid the COE. Check how many years are left on it, because that is the time your money buys.
Road tax: a small-engine figure
For a 1,499cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$683.66 a year, before any age surcharge. That is far below what the 2-litre cars in the same range pay.
Once a car is over 10 years old, a surcharge applies:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Check the registration date of any car you view. The road tax page has the full working.
Car insurance for a set driver
The BMW 225xe price page prices this example:
- Car: BMW 225xe, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
11 insurers price the 225xe for that driver. The lowest premium is S$770.30 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$3,203.01. The gap is S$2,432.71, or 316% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Few cars show a spread this wide. The dearest lowest plan costs about four times the lowest premium. A few figures on the page are estimates, so check them on the insurer's own quote before you decide.
Excess levels
The excess is your share of each claim. Most 225xe plans carry S$600, with others at S$500 or S$800. One plan asks S$2,500 and one has none. Put the excess beside the premium as you compare.
How your details change the price
The price page shows the lowest premium after one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,406.18, S$635.88 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,297.35, S$527.05 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,327.33, S$557.03 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$770.30, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$793.75, S$23.45 more
- A car 8 years old: S$706.67, S$63.63 less
NCD is the big factor. With none, the lowest premium is 83% higher, and even 20% NCD costs S$527.05 more than 50%. A younger driver with a short record pays nearly as much. The older driver pays the same as the example.
Car age makes only a small difference. An 8-year-old 225xe is S$63.63 cheaper at the lowest price. These are lowest prices only, and plans above them can behave differently.
Next to similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
The six average S$720.97. The 225xe costs 7% more than that. Four of the six are cheaper to insure, while the Mazda 3 and Mercedes-Benz GLB cost more. Other BMW models are on the BMW car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks a wider list.
Costs only you can estimate
- Parking: season parking at home, plus work and weekend parking.
- Petrol and charging: depends on your distance, the pump price and, if you charge the car, where you charge and the rate you pay.
- ERP: depends on your routes and times.
- Servicing and repairs: ask for the service history on a used car, and what any remaining warranty covers.
- Depreciation: set by the price you pay and the COE years left when you sell.
Summary of yearly costs we can show
