BMW 220i in Singapore, road tax, COE and a wide insurance spread

What a BMW 220i costs to keep in Singapore: road tax for its 1,997cc engine, a Category B COE and dated insurance examples that vary widely.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The BMW 220i has one figure on its price page that is hard to miss. For the same car and the same driver, the dearest insurer's lowest plan costs several times the lowest premium. This page starts from that and works through every cost we can date: the COE, road tax and car insurance.

All insurance figures are examples, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. Your own premium follows your own details. Use them to see how the costs behave, not as a quote.

The car priced

The quote form has one entry, the BMW 220i, with a 1,997cc engine. The new-car list has no 220i on sale now, so this page has no list price, power figure or body type. If you are shopping for one, it will be a used car.

Category B COE

The price page states that the 220i, with a 1,997cc engine above 1,600cc, needs a Category B COE. Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.

With a used car, the COE was paid by an earlier owner. The value you are buying is the time left on it. Ask for the COE expiry date and set it against the asking price. The COE page has the latest results if you plan to renew.

Road tax for 1,997cc

Road tax is tied to engine size. For the 220i's 1,997cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$1,208.58 a year, before any age surcharge.

Cars past 10 years pay a surcharge that climbs each year:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

On an older car with a renewed COE, the bill can sit well above the base. The road tax page shows how it is worked out.

Insurance: from the lowest to the dearest

The BMW 220i price page prices this example:

  • Car: BMW 220i, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

11 insurers price the 220i for that driver. The lowest premium is S$918.30 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$3,994.05. That is S$3,075.75 more, or 335% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

That spread is the main story for this car. A driver who renews without checking could pay S$3,075.75 a year more than the lowest premium for the same cover type. A few prices on the page are estimates, so the insurer's own quote has the final word.

The excess

The excess is the amount you pay on each claim. Most 220i plans carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. One plan asks S$2,500, and one has no excess. When two premiums are close, compare the excess too.

What moves the lowest premium

The price page shows the lowest price after one change, with all else kept the same:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,360.92, S$442.62 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,360.92, S$442.62 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,360.92, S$442.62 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,003.52, S$85.22 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$945.93, S$27.63 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$874.08, S$44.22 less

With no NCD, the lowest premium is 48% higher. A 20% NCD and a younger driver with a short record land on the same figure. An older driver pays somewhat more than the example.

The car's age barely shifts the price. That suits a used-car buyer: an 8-year-old 220i is S$44.22 cheaper to insure at the lowest price. Keep in mind that these are lowest prices only. Other plans may move in different ways.

Similar cars on the same terms

The price page compares six cars for the same driver and car age:

The six average S$878.01. The 220i costs 5% more than that, placing it near the middle. Three of the six, the E-Class, Voxy and Harrier, are cheaper to insure. The other three cost more. For other BMW models, see the BMW car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page for a wider ranking.

Costs set by how you use the car

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town.
  • Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on which roads you use and when.
  • Servicing and repairs: on a used car, ask for the service history and what is due next, such as tyres, brakes or a battery.
  • Depreciation: shaped by what you pay now and the COE years left when you sell.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the BMW 220i, dated:

  • Road tax: S$1,208.58 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)

  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,360.92
