Families often look at the BMW 218i Gran Tourer on the used market. If that is you, the question is what it will cost each year after you buy it. This page answers with every figure we can date: road tax, car insurance and the COE, plus the costs you will need to estimate yourself.
The insurance prices are examples, read on 20 October 2026, for one stated driver and car. Your own premium depends on your age, record and the car you choose. Use them as a guide to how the costs behave.
The model
The quote form lists the BMW 218i Gran Tourer with a 1,499cc engine, and that is the car priced below. There is no entry for it on the new-car list now. So this page gives no list price, power figure or body type.
Insurance for an example family driver
The BMW 218i Gran Tourer price page prices this case:
- Car: 218i Gran Tourer, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
14 insurers price it for that driver. The lowest premium is S$700.28 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is the dearest asks at least S$2,578.02. That is S$1,877.74 more, or 268% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
So the dearest lowest plan costs well over three times the lowest premium. On a family budget, that difference could cover a lot of other costs. A few prices on the page are estimates, so check the final figure on the insurer's own quote.
Excess
Each plan sets an excess, the amount you pay on a claim. Most plans for this car carry S$600. Others sit at S$500, S$750 or S$800. One asks S$2,500, and one has no excess. Look at the excess before you settle on the lowest premium.
When the details change
The price page shows the lowest premium after one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,341.15, S$640.87 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,179.41, S$479.13 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,327.33, S$627.05 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$700.28, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$721.59, S$21.31 more
- A car 8 years old: S$642.42, S$57.86 less
With no NCD, the lowest premium is 92% higher. A younger main driver with three years' driving pays nearly as much. For a family where a newer driver may take the wheel, that line is worth noting, and you can check named-driver prices on the insurer's quote.
An older driver pays the same as the example. The car's age moves the lowest price only a little: an 8-year-old car is S$57.86 cheaper. These are lowest prices; other plans may move by more.
Against similar family cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six cars:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
The six average S$720.97. The 218i Gran Tourer is 3% below that. Three of them, the Corolla Altis, the Freed and the Sienta, are cheaper to insure. The Kona, the GLB and the Mazda 3 cost more. Other BMW models are on the BMW car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page has a wider ranking.
Road tax
For a 1,499cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$683.66 a year, before any age surcharge.
Past 10 years, a surcharge is added:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
If you plan to keep the car for many years on a renewed COE, these steps add up. The road tax page explains the formula.
The COE
For the 218i Gran Tourer's 1,499cc engine, the category turns on power. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more. In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100.
On a used car the COE is already paid. Ask how many years it has left, and weigh the price against that. The COE page has the latest results.
Costs to estimate yourself
- Parking: season parking at home, plus school, work and weekend parking.
- Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and the times you drive.
- Servicing and repairs: ask for the service history, and budget for tyres, brakes and a battery over the years.
- Depreciation: set by what you pay and the COE years left when you sell.
