The Proton Saga has a small 1.3 engine, which keeps its road tax down. Its insurance also comes in below most of the similar cars we compare it with. This page puts figures on those costs and the COE, then lists the costs that depend on you.
Insurance prices here were read on 20 October 2026 for one stated driver. They are examples and not a quote for you.
Version on our form
The new-car list we read has no Saga on sale now, so we show no list price. Our quote form prices the Proton Saga 1.3, with a 1,298cc engine. Every figure below is for it.
COE category
For the Saga 1.3, with its 1,298cc engine, the category depends on power:
- Category A if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less: S$130,001 in the October 2026 1st round
- Category B if it is more: S$130,100 in that round
Bidding sets new figures each round. On a used car, the COE is already in the price, so check its expiry date. The COE page shows the latest round.
Road tax on a 1.3
LTA's formula gives the 1,298cc engine a road tax of S$565.78 a year, before any age surcharge.
Cars more than 10 years old pay a surcharge:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Engine size is what sets the base figure, so a smaller engine pays less. The road tax page has the sums for other sizes.
Insurance for the Saga
The Proton Saga price page prices one profile:
- Car: Saga 1.3, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: at an authorised workshop, no add-ons
What you would see
14 insurers price this car online, and two on our panel have no price for it yet. The lowest premium is S$569.36 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,364.15, which is S$794.79 more, or 140% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
That means one insurer's lowest plan costs well over twice another's, for the same car and driver.
Excess
The common excess on this page is S$600. Others are S$500, S$750 or S$800. Some plans carry S$2,500 or S$3,000, and one has none. Look at each premium with its excess before you decide which is the better price for you.
Estimates
A few prices on the page are marked as estimates. Confirm them on the insurer's own site, where you finish buying.
How the price shifts
The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes:
- No NCD (0%): S$868.93, S$299.57 more
- 20% NCD: S$868.93, S$299.57 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$868.93, S$299.57 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$569.36, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$586.41, S$17.05 more
- A car 8 years old: S$545.00, S$24.36 less
Three lines land on one figure. No NCD, 20% NCD and the younger driver all see the lowest price rise 53%. The older driver pays the same as the standard driver, though one fewer insurer gives that driver a price. A newer Saga costs a little more to insure and an older one a little less.
Remember these are lowest prices only. Other plans can move by more or less.
Things to check on a plan
- Workshop: the prices assume an authorised workshop. A plan that lets you choose any workshop can cost a different amount.
- Named drivers: check who may drive, and what adding a young driver does to the price.
- NCD protection: an optional add-on on some plans, not in these prices.
- Cover limits: check what the plan pays for windscreen damage, towing and a replacement car, if anything.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Mercedes-Benz A-Class: S$787.96
- Mercedes-Benz GLA: S$787.96
- Honda Jazz / Fit: S$622.34
- Toyota Yaris Cross: S$604.07
- Toyota C-HR: S$552.91
Their average lowest price is S$690.53. The Saga, at S$569.36, is 18% below it. Only the C-HR costs less to insure for this driver. Other Proton models are on the Proton car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks models across makes.
Costs we leave to you
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and when out.
- Petrol: depends on your mileage and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on where and when you drive.
- Servicing and repairs: follow the maker's schedule, and plan for tyres, brakes and a battery over time. On a used car, ask for the service history.
- Depreciation: depends on what you pay, the COE years left and the price you sell at.
