The Proton Preve is no longer on the new-car list we read, so most buyers in Singapore will meet it as a used car. Either way, you pay the same kinds of yearly bills. This page sets out those we can put a number on, and the NCD stands out as the factor that matters most for this car's insurance.
All insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show the spread, not your own price.
The Preve on our quote form
There is no list price here. Our quote form prices the Proton Preve 1.6, with a 1,561cc engine, and every figure on this page is for that car.
The COE rule
For the Preve 1.6, with its 1,561cc engine, the COE category depends on power:
- Category A: 97kW (130bhp) or less. The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001.
- Category B: more than that. The same round closed at S$130,100.
These figures move with each bidding round. On a used Preve, the COE is already paid, and its remaining years are part of what you are buying. The COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 1,561cc engine a road tax of S$720.02 a year, before any age surcharge.
An age surcharge applies once the car is over 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Check the registration date of any Preve you look at, since the surcharge raises the bill each year past that point. The road tax page has other engine sizes.
What insurance costs
The Proton Preve price page prices this profile:
- Car: Preve 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: at an authorised workshop, no add-ons
Nine insurers, a wide gap
9 insurers give an online price. Seven others on our panel do not: six have no online price for the model yet, and one does not list it on its online quote.
The lowest premium is S$622.34 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,448.89. That is S$826.55 more, or 133% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
With fewer insurers quoting online, it can help to ask others for a quote directly.
The excess
Most plans on this page carry a S$600 excess. Four carry S$2,500 or S$3,000, and one has no excess at all. That is a big range. The plans with the higher excess are not always the lower premiums, so read the two figures together.
The NCD effect
The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,403.77, S$781.43 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,048.14, S$425.80 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,170.50, S$548.16 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$622.34, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$642.42, S$20.08 more
- A car 8 years old: S$569.36, S$52.98 less
Losing all your NCD raises the lowest price by 126%. That is more than double. Even at 20% NCD, the lowest price is well above the standard driver's. If you have built up a high NCD, the way you protect it matters a great deal on this car.
A younger driver also pays a lot more. An older driver pays the same lowest price, though one fewer insurer gives a price. Car age moves the lowest price only a little. For a new car, 8 insurers give a price.
These lines are lowest prices only. Dearer plans may move by other amounts.
Points to look at in a plan
- Workshop: these prices are for an authorised workshop. Plans that allow any workshop can price differently.
- Who may drive: check the named drivers and what an extra driver costs.
- NCD protection: it is not in these prices, but some plans offer it as an add-on.
How the Preve compares
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The Preve, at S$622.34, is 15% below it. Only one of the six, the Sienta, costs less to insure. Every one of them is quoted online by more insurers than the Preve. Other Protons are on the Proton car insurance page.
What varies from owner to owner
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and elsewhere. Check your own rate.
- Petrol: depends on your mileage and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and your timing.
- Servicing and repairs: follow the maker's schedule. On a used car, ask for the service record and check that parts are easy to get.
- Depreciation: depends on the price you pay, the COE years left and what you sell for.
