Proton Persona costs in Singapore, from road tax to insurance

The Proton Persona 1.6 in Singapore: road tax, the COE rule and dated car insurance prices from 14 insurers for one standard driver.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Proton Persona's insurance prices tell an interesting story. The lowest premium sits above most of the similar cars it is compared with, yet losing your NCD moves that lowest price by only 15%. This page goes through those figures, the road tax and the COE.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your own premium depends on your details.

The version we priced

The new-car list we read has no Persona on sale now, so this page has no list price. Our quote form prices the Proton Persona 1.6, with a 1,597cc engine.

The COE

For the Persona 1.6 and its 1,597cc engine, the COE category depends on power:

  • Category A if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less: S$130,001 in the October 2026 1st round
  • Category B if it is more: S$130,100 in that round

A used Persona comes with its COE. How many years it has left matters for the price you pay. The COE page shows the latest bidding results.

Road tax

Road tax for the 1,597cc engine comes to S$741.14 a year under LTA's formula, before any age surcharge.

For cars more than 10 years old, a surcharge is added:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page has the formula for other engine sizes.

Insurance for the Persona

The Proton Persona price page prices one profile:

  • Car: Persona 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: at an authorised workshop, no add-ons

Here's the range

14 insurers price this car online. The lowest premium is S$814.73 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,448.89, which is S$634.16 more, or 78% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Two insurers on our panel have no online price for the Persona yet. The price page lists them.

Read the plan, not just the price

Plans at similar prices are not always the same cover. The lowest-priced plan here and some others are named as narrower or wider versions of an insurer's cover. Before you choose, check what each plan pays for, not only its premium.

The excess

Most plans carry a S$600 excess. Others carry S$500, S$750 or S$800. A few carry S$2,500 or S$3,000, and one has no excess. Compare the excess with the premium, plan by plan.

How the lowest price moves

With one thing changed, the price page shows these lowest prices:

  • No NCD (0%): S$939.61, S$124.88 more
  • 20% NCD: S$939.61, S$124.88 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$939.61, S$124.88 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$905.30, S$90.57 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$855.38, S$40.65 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$790.40, S$24.33 less

The NCD line rises by only 15%, a small step for losing all of it. The young driver lands on the same figure. An older driver pays more, not the same, and one fewer insurer gives that driver a price. A new car costs a little more, and an older car a little less.

Each line is the lowest price only, and the insurer behind it can change from line to line. Dearer plans may move by other amounts.

Points to check on any plan

The premium is only one part of a plan. When you compare, look at these as well:

  • Workshop: these prices assume repairs at an authorised workshop. A plan that lets you use any workshop may cost a different amount.
  • Named drivers: check who else is allowed to drive the car, and whether a young or new driver changes the price.
  • NCD protection: some plans offer it as an add-on, which keeps your discount after a claim. It is not in these prices.
  • Estimates: a few prices on the page are marked as estimates. Confirm them on the insurer's own site, where you finish buying.

Next to similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:

Their average lowest price is S$724.93. The Persona, at S$814.73, is 12% above it. Five of the six cost less to insure for this driver; only the Mazda 3 costs more. For other Protons, see the Proton car insurance page, and for a ranking across makes, the cheapest cars to insure page.

Costs that depend on the owner

Some costs depend too much on you to give one figure:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work, malls and the roadside.
  • Petrol: depends on how far you drive and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on which roads you use and when.
  • Servicing and repairs: follow the maker's schedule, and budget for tyres, brakes and a battery over time. On a used car, ask to see the service history.
  • Depreciation: depends on what you pay, the COE years left and what the car fetches later.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the Proton Persona 1.6, dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$741.14 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$814.73 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$939.61
  • Insurance, driver aged 65: from S$905.30
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$790.40

For a new registration, the October 2026 1st round COE was S$130,001 (Category A) or S$130,100 (Category B).
