Small engines tend to mean smaller bills, and the Hyundai Verna 1.4 GL bears that out on road tax and insurance. The Verna has no entry on the current new-car list. If you own one, or are thinking of buying one used, here is how its yearly costs add up.
Each insurance figure is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Use them to see how prices compare. They are not a quote.
Versions on the form
The quote form lists two Vernas:
- Verna 1.4 GL: 1,399cc
- Verna 1.6 (A): 1,599cc
The 1.4 GL is the version most insurers quote, so the figures below are for it. With no new-car list entry, there is no list price, power or body type to give.
COE
For the 1.4 GL, with its 1,399cc engine, the price page states the rule. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and Category B if more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These change each round, and the COE page has the latest. On a used car, the COE years remaining often matter more to its value than its mileage.
Road tax
LTA's formula puts road tax for a 1,399cc engine at S$625.02 a year, before any age surcharge. Older cars pay a surcharge on top:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The 1.6 (A) has a larger engine, so its road tax is higher. See the road tax page for its figure.
Insurance for the standard driver
The Hyundai Verna price page prices these details:
- Car: Verna 1.4 GL, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
12 insurers give a price. The lowest premium is S$569.36. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,127.06, which is S$557.70 more, or 98% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
In other words, the top of the range is close to twice the bottom for the same car and driver. Four insurers have no online price for the Verna at all. The list is still long enough to compare well. Give every insurer the same details, so the prices you collect line up with each other.
How the excess differs
Most plans set the excess at S$600, and some at S$500 or S$800. Several go to S$2,500, and one to S$3,000. The excess is what you pay before the insurer pays on a claim. When two premiums are close, the excess can decide which plan costs less over a year in which you claim. Check, too, whether younger or unnamed drivers face a higher one.
What changes the price
The price page reprices the lowest premium with one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$925.07, S$355.71 more
- 20% NCD: S$925.07, S$355.71 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$925.07, S$355.71 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$569.36, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$586.41, S$17.05 more
- A car 8 years old: S$545.00, S$24.36 less
The no-NCD figure is 62% above the standard driver's lowest price. The same figure applies to 20% NCD and to a younger driver with 30% NCD. That points to one plan setting the floor for all three. If you are adding a younger driver, ask each insurer how it prices that driver, since the lowest plan may change.
Car age makes only a small difference here. An 8-year-old Verna starts at S$545 a year, against S$569.36 for a 3-year-old one. These are lowest prices; other plans can move by more or less.
Against similar cars
The price page sets the Verna beside six cars for the same driver and car age:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The Verna is 23% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. Other Hyundai models are on the Hyundai car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page compares makes.
Costs we cannot put a figure on
These depend on the owner:
- Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus parking at work and on errands.
- Petrol: your mileage and what the pump charges.
- ERP: your routes and the hours you drive them.
- Servicing and repairs: regular servicing, then tyres, brakes, a battery and other wear parts as the car gets older. Ask to see receipts for past work.
- Depreciation: what you pay, against the COE years left and what the car fetches when you sell.
Summary of yearly costs we can show
