What does a Hyundai Elantra cost to keep on the road in Singapore each year? The answer is a mix of fixed charges and costs that depend on you. This page covers the fixed ones we can show: road tax, the COE rule and car insurance.
Treat the insurance prices as examples. They are for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your age, record and car will give you a different figure.
Which Elantra the figures cover
There is no new-car list entry for the Elantra on sale now. That means no list price and no power figure here.
Three versions appear on our quote form:
- Elantra 1.6: 1,590cc
- Elantra 1.8: 1,797cc
- Elantra 2.0: 1,999cc
Most of our insurers quote the 1.6, so every figure below is for that car. The 1.8 and 2.0 pay more road tax.
How much road tax?
For the Elantra 1.6's 1,590cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$737.04 a year, before any surcharge for age.
Once a car is over 10 years old, a surcharge is added:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The larger engines fall in a higher band. The road tax page works out the exact figure for each.
Which COE category?
The price page gives a rule for the Elantra 1.6. With its 1,590cc engine, it needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. A used Elantra carries its existing COE, so check how many years it has left. The COE page lists every round.
What does insurance cost?
The Hyundai Elantra price page quotes one profile at every insurer:
- Car: Elantra 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
15 insurers price the Elantra for that driver. The lowest premium is S$622.34. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,392.44. The difference is S$770.10, or 124% on top. Prices include 9% GST.
So the top of the range is more than double the bottom, for an identical driver. A single quote tells you very little on its own. Two or three quotes, set side by side, show you far more about where your price sits.
And the excess?
Each plan has an excess, your share of a claim. Most Elantra plans set it at S$600. Some ask S$500, S$750 or S$800. A few go to S$2,500 or S$3,000. One plan asks none, S$0.
When two premiums are close, the excess may be the bigger difference between them. Check it on every quote you compare.
What changes the price?
The price page holds the profile steady and changes one thing at a time:
- No NCD (0%): S$979.02, S$356.68 more
- 20% NCD: S$979.02, S$356.68 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$979.02, S$356.68 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$622.34, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$642.42, S$20.08 more
- A car 8 years old: S$569.36, S$52.98 less
Losing all NCD lifts the lowest price by 57%. That is the largest change by far. The younger driver on 30% NCD lands on the same figure.
Car age moves the price only a little. An 8-year-old Elantra is slightly cheaper to insure at the lowest price. A new one is slightly dearer. Remember that these are lowest prices; other plans may move by more.
How does it compare with similar cars?
For the same driver and car age, the price page sets out six similar cars:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class: S$749.93
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
These average S$729.65. The Elantra, at S$622.34, is 15% below that average. Only one of the six, the Sienta, costs less to insure. More Hyundais are on the Hyundai car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page compares models across makes.
What else should you budget for?
Some costs are too personal for a single figure. They still add up:
- Parking: HDB or condo season parking, and paid parking at work and in town. Check your own block's rate.
- Petrol: set by distance and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and when you use them.
- Servicing and wear: tyres, brakes and batteries come due on any car that is not new. A service record helps you plan.
- Depreciation: depends on the price you pay and how much COE life is left.
