Hyundai Sonata ownership costs and insurance prices in Singapore

A Hyundai Sonata 2.0 CRDi in Singapore, cost by cost: Category B COE, road tax and dated car insurance examples for one driver.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

A Hyundai Sonata on Singapore roads today is most likely one bought some years ago, since the model has no entry on the current new-car list. For an owner, or someone weighing up a used one, the questions are practical. What does road tax come to, which COE category applies, and how much does cover cost?

The insurance prices here are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Treat them as a way to see the spread, not as a quote.

Engines on the form

The quote form has two Sonata versions:

  • Sonata 2.0 CRDi: 1,991cc
  • Sonata 2.4: 2,359cc

The 2.0 CRDi is the one most insurers quote, so it is the one priced below. With no new-car list entry, there is no list price, power figure or body type to give.

COE category

The price page is clear on this one. With a 1,991cc engine, above 1,600cc, the Sonata 2.0 CRDi needs a Category B COE. In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100.

On a used car, the time left on its COE shapes what it is worth. Check the expiry date. The COE page has each round's results.

Road tax and the age surcharge

LTA's formula for a 1,991cc engine gives S$1,201.54 a year, before any surcharge. Older cars pay more on top:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The 2.4's bigger engine takes it into a higher road tax figure. You can work out any engine size on the road tax page.

The standard driver's insurance

The Hyundai Sonata price page quotes for this case:

  • Car: Sonata 2.0 CRDi, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

8 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$721.59. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,803.42, which is S$1,081.83 more, or 150% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Eight insurers give no online price for the Sonata. One lists it only with another engine or fuel type, so its price would be for a different car. That leaves a short list, and a wide gap from top to bottom. On an older car, some insurers may also have their own limits on car age, so ask early.

The excess

Plans for the Sonata set the excess at S$500, S$600 or S$750. The exception is the dearest plan, which carries none. Line up each plan's excess with its premium when you compare. A plan that looks cheaper can cost more in a year when you claim. Also ask whether a separate, higher excess applies to young drivers, to drivers not named on the policy, or to windscreen damage. Those terms differ between plans and can matter as much as the headline figure.

How the numbers shift

The price page gives the lowest premium as one thing changes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,658.87, S$937.28 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,215.31, S$493.72 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,410.06, S$688.47 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$721.59, no change
  • A new car, registered this year: S$742.90, S$21.31 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$660.69, S$60.90 less

No-claim discount drives this table. Without it, the lowest price is 130% higher than for the standard driver. Each NCD step in between still adds a good amount. A younger driver with fewer years and only 30% NCD pays close to double.

Car age moves the price only a little. The 8-year-old car is slightly cheaper to insure at this lowest price. Other plans may shift by other amounts, since these are lowest prices only.

Set against similar cars

The price page compares the Sonata with six cars of a similar engine size, for the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$867.25. The Sonata is 17% below that, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. You can see other Hyundai models on the Hyundai car insurance page.

Costs that come down to you

These vary too much from one owner to the next to put a number on:

  • Parking: season parking at an HDB carpark or condo, plus parking where you work and shop.
  • Fuel: how far you travel and what you pay at the pump.
  • ERP: your routes and the time of day.
  • Servicing and repairs: routine servicing, plus tyres, brakes, a battery and other wear parts on an older car. Ask for the service history before you buy.
  • Depreciation: the price you pay set against the COE years left.

Summary of yearly costs we can show

For the Sonata 2.0 CRDi, as dated:

  • Road tax: S$1,201.54 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$721.59 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,658.87
  • Insurance, 20% NCD: from S$1,215.31
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$660.69

For a car registered on a fresh COE, Category B closed at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round.
