A compact SUV like the Hyundai Kona can look affordable on the showroom floor. The real question is what it costs year after year. This page breaks that down: what you pay to buy, which COE applies, what road tax comes to, and how insurance prices compare.
All insurance figures are examples for a single stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Use them to compare, not as a quote.
Kona versions, then and now
On 2026-10-10 the new-car list showed two Kona versions. Both are petrol-electric hybrid SUVs made in Korea, with a 1,580cc engine and 129bhp:
- Kona Hybrid 1.6 S
- Kona Hybrid 1.6 Elite
Our quote form lists three versions, including older cars: the Kona 1.0 (998cc), the Kona 1.6 (1,591cc) and the Kona Electric. The insurance figures here are for the Kona 1.6 (1,591cc), the version most insurers quote. A current hybrid may price a little differently.
Buying one: the list price
As listed on 2026-10-10, with COE included in the price that day:
- Kona Hybrid 1.6 S: S$204,999
- Kona Hybrid 1.6 Elite: S$214,999
COE rounds move list prices up and down. Get a dated quote from the dealer and check what it covers.
The COE that applies
The price page sets out the rule for the 1,591cc Kona 1.6. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.
The October 2026 1st round closed at S$130,001 for Category A and S$130,100 for Category B. Newer rounds are on the COE page.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$737.62 a year for the 1,591cc engine, before any age surcharge. The current hybrids have a 1,580cc engine, and the older 1.0 a much smaller one, so their road tax differs. Work out any size on the road tax page.
The surcharge on older cars:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Insurance: today's examples
The Hyundai Kona price page uses one profile:
- Car: Kona 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
12 insurers quote it. The lowest premium is S$721.59. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,609.68: S$888.09 more, or 123% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Four insurers on our panel have no online price for the Kona yet. That is worth knowing if you usually renew with one of the bigger names: not every insurer quotes every model online.
Excess. The figure you pay towards a claim ranges from S$0 to S$3,000 on this page. Most plans sit at S$600. The second-lowest premium carries a S$2,500 excess, so price and excess need reading together.
Workshop. The lowest plan allows any workshop or authorised workshops. Most others are for authorised workshops.
The price under different conditions
The price page changes one thing at a time and shows the new lowest price:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,161.94, S$440.35 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,161.94, S$440.35 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,161.94, S$440.35 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$721.59, the same, 11 insurers pricing
- A new car, registered this year: S$742.90, S$21.31 more, 11 insurers pricing
- A car 8 years old: S$660.69, S$60.90 less
The NCD is the big one. Without it, the lowest price rises by 61%.
The driver's age matters at the young end. A driver aged 27 with a 30% NCD pays the same as no NCD. A driver aged 65 pays the standard price.
The car's age shifts the price only a little either way.
These are lowest prices. Dearer plans may move by different amounts.
Six similar cars, one driver
The price page compares the Kona with six similar cars for the same driver and car age:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class: S$749.93
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
Their average lowest price is S$729.65, and the Kona sits 1% below it. 3 of the six are cheaper to insure and 3 cost more. So on insurance alone, the Kona lands in the middle of this group. Other Hyundai models are on the Hyundai car insurance page.
What depends on how you use it
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus what you pay at work and when out.
- Petrol: depends on how far you drive and pump prices. The current versions are hybrids.
- ERP: depends on your daily routes and the times you travel.
- Servicing and wear: follow the maker's schedule. Ask how long the warranty runs and what it covers.
- Depreciation: depends on the price you pay and what the car is worth when you sell or deregister it.
